Frankie Sims (authorfrankiesims) This is not my question, I actually saw it in a discussion from our very own member, Chantalle, and thought I would start a discussion board for it! Thank you for the amazing question Chantalle!

Frankie Sims (authorfrankiesims) Personally, I've only been reading reviews for books before adding them to my TBR since I joined Goodreads. Before this site, I just formed my own opinion after reading the description of the book, and figured out whether or not I want to give it a try! But, I do appreciate reading reviews now, more than I did back then.

I was the same way! Before, reviews didn't matter to me. Now, If I am interested in a book, I will read the reviews here on Goodreads. Have you ever read a book that had bad reviews that you actually thought was pretty good?

message 4: by Ken (new)

Ken Same here! Actually, I have read a few. Just remember to not base it solely off reviews now that we can actually check them out. We still need descriptions!

Not yet, but I'm bracing myself for whether or not 'Wayward Son' will be as bad as the reviews I've seen for it say it is. A lot of the reviews I've read say it's so bad they pretend 'Carry On' is a standalone. I'm starting to get quite nervous to read it. I don't want to be disappointed.

message 6: by kylee (new)

kylee It opens up magic more, and i really like it, but it is definitely different from Carry On.

I'm really hoping I enjoy it!

kylee Have you heard she’s making a third one?

Frankie Sims (authorfrankiesims) kylee wrote: "Have you heard she’s making a third one?"

Yes! I have! I've followed her on Twitter for years, so I'm pretty up-to-date with all the hype surrounding her books! I just don't know how I've avoided spoilers, lol. But, I'm excited for it! I love Simon and I'd read anything he's in!

message 10: by Cat (new)

Cat Carstairs I definitely read reviews before I read a book. I like to see how people's opinions can be different. If someone rates a book poorly that I really want to read, I'll be even more intrigued to read it and be determined that it's good.

That's a good way to see things!

gracesreads (gracegoddamnit) | 47 comments Question: how do u respond to what some one else has said in a good reads chat?? I’ve never done this before and I find so much relatable!

message 13: by gracesreads (new)

gracesreads (gracegoddamnit) | 47 comments I read reviews usually when I’m about to finish a book but I feel like I can’t finish it yet. That way I’m not actually reading it, but I’m still thinking about it (I tend to savor books, but I’ve gotten better recently)

message 14: by gracesreads (new)

gracesreads (gracegoddamnit) | 47 comments Thanks! I still don’t see it but I’m about to try on my computer

message 16: by Maddie (new)

Maddie No I don't I just get the book. ( Given experiences I probably should read the Reviews first...)

message 17: by kylee (new)

kylee @Madilyn (sorry if i misspelled that!)
Felt that! There was this gorgeous book called Dealing in Dreams that looked good, but was terrible! Sadly i bought it before reading the reviews :(

I know! I got a book called: Before I Let Go
and I was excited and I read it then, well I couldn't bring myself to keep it. Books create feeling that the characters feel and I didn't need though's feelings thanks! I threw the book away.

Haha I can relate. What past experiences have burned you?

I personally just go to the library or book store and read the blurbs. Sometimes I bring home gold. Sometimes it's disappointment. I do look at reviews if I am looking for something in a specific genre though.

Israel (joybookish) | 7 comments If I want to read it, I will. If I'm on the fence, I'll check to see if it had at least 3 stars on Goodreads

message 21: by Karla (new)

Karla Barv | 1 comments A veces, aunque de vez en cuando me gusta aventurarme y comprar un libro al azar. De esta manera me he llevado algunas buenas sorpresas.

Férfi könyvvel a kezében | 5 comments It depends wether it's a professional read, or -just-for-fun. The former I never check, bc if I'm interested, I read it anyways, the latter only if I liked it very much or not at all. So pretty much only in extreme cases.
I do check the rating of books however, it shouldn't be under 3.5 stars..:D

message 23: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (moonbeamnessa) | 4 comments It depends, I typically don’t care about the rating as much, but I do like to know what I’m getting myself into. Like if people liked the writing, if it’s good. If I see too many bad reviews I might get discouraged to read it so I try to not read negative reviews if it’s a book I really want to read. One weird thing I do before starting any book is reading the last sentence/paragraph/page of a book, if it’s interesting or good I’ll be even more excited to read the book. (I usually forget the last sentence/paragraph/page when I actually start reading the book) is it only me? Lol

message 25: by #1 wei wuxian respecter (last edited May 01, 2020 12:22PM) (new)

#1 wei wuxian respecter i don't really do that, i think. usually just the summary is enough for me and i'm not purposely searching reviews up, but sometimes opinions of other people are what i see first and then if they say sth is good i may be more interested in finding and reading what they are recommending

message 26: by Jay (new)

Jay No, I just watch a lot of https://www.youtube.com/user/jessethe... videos! I'm a bookish person, so I watch book filled videos! Plus jessethereader reads a lot of the same things as me, so I read what he reads... That's about it... :)

message 27: by Patri (new)

Patri I don’t use to do that, I prefer to read a book with my mind blank, I mean without an opinion made before. Sometimes I watch YT videos for knowing new titles but I try to skip the review.

message 28: by Ramón (new)

Ramón S. | 3 comments Since I am in Goodreads I read the reviews of the persons that I know we have similar taste for books, and yes! Sometimes I read bad reviews and the book was really good to me

message 29: by Daniy ♠ (new)

Daniy ♠ (niiy) I read reviews from books I don't know much about, for example if the title sounded interesting but I don't know anything else about the autor or the story, I would read reviews.
Bad reviews usually don't change my mind, unless a lot of them are about something I care about in a book.

message 30: by Gloria (new)

Gloria Parejo (gloria_parejo) | 8 comments If I saw the book or the cover before and I know more or less what it is about then I don't read any reviews, but for example today I wanted to buy Viking Wolf and I read some reviews just to know what was about, I decided not to read it.

message 31: by harsh (new)

harsh gaur (harshgaur) | 6 comments I chose my books books based upon the genres I like. I have a very specific genres in my palette. Following that, I read the reviews so that I know whether to proceed with the book or not.

message 32: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Adomniti | 5 comments Personally, I read the description, then I look at the rating it has in here and then look for opinions from my favourite booktubers and that's kind of it. I don't really look for many reviews because I like to form my own opinion and I am absolutely mortified of accidentally reading a spoiler

message 33: by Julia (new)

Julia | 16 comments I don’t usually know much about books before starting them. I get to read them because I heard of them from a YouTuber or a friend, but I don’t look up reviews of the books or anything like that.

message 34: by alicia (new)

alicia (rgvndr) It depends, sometimes I'm curious about what type of book I'm going to buy and if it is going to be something that connects with me, but it has coincided that my favorite books are those that I have bought without knowing anything about them.

message 35: by Josie (new)

Josie | 3 comments I read them before buying, but not reading.

Yep same, if I’m getting the book for free (from a friend/library) I’ll read it if I like the sound of the blurb

I love reading reviews after reading the book ! I think it gives you a different perspective than your own opinion and I think it's great. Sometimes, it's not though...
