Alexandra O'Connor What my mother doesn't know by Sonya Sones is a poetic novel written in the perspective of Sophie, a ninth grader trying to understand the difference of love and lust. The narrative starts off with Sophia meeting Dylan, and as any young adolescent, she became infatuated with him. Dylan starts to put the pressure on Sophie in wanting to advance further physically. Sophie eventually starts to feel smothered and pressured by Dylan, so she starts thinking about a social reject named Murphy. AsmSophie navigates through the school year, she finds herself fantasizing about Murphy and wondering if it is possible to have a connection with someone even if here is no physical connection. However, Murphy is the school outcast so she assumes there would never be any physical connection. What made me really sad about this book was that Sophie felt no love or connection to her parents. All she wanted was love and affection. She was never given this love, therefore she was out searching for it in all the wrong ways. I personally am a mother to a 15 year old teenager and this book really opened my eyes. I want to make sure my daughter feels loved and secure so she can maintain healthy relationships in the future. This poem was captivating and I want my 15 year old daughter to read it.
