Plausible plot?

I grew up with the original Princess Diaries series, and am excited about the newest books (this as a spin-off and Royal Wedding). But it seems a bit shaky to me that Mia's dad has yet ANOTHER kid and has been keeping it a secret from Mia. The public? Yes. His only OTHER child? Huh. Not that this stuff doesn't happen in real-life (royal families or not).

Also, it's interesting that Meg Cabot's official website doesn't explicitly SAY she is her half-sister:
