Hi there online readers!

This month we will be discussing “The Institute”, the most recent work by horror legend Stephen King. Though the novel contains similar themes and characters to many of his previous works I would definitely refer to this book as more of a sci-fi thriller than outright horror, so rest easy those who scare easily! This novel tells of 12-year-old Luke’s kidnapping and subsequent installment in “The Institute”, an underground government facility researching psychic abilities. If you liked "Stranger Things" you will like this book!

Copies of the book are available through the library in a variety of formats. Check out SCPL’s catalogue, or find it on our Cloud Library.

Rather than beginning with Luke, instead we are first introduced to Tim Jamieson, a former cop-turned-drifter who finds work in a small town in North Carolina. How is Tim different from King’s usual choice of adult protagonist? What is your opinion on this difference – is it refreshing or jarring? Why do you think he’s chosen Tim to be the adult point of view in this novel?

Happy reading!
-Emily
