What do you see as Jenneke and Anselma’s purpose in the book? Mantel says Cromwell was reputed to have an illegitimate daughter but I feel it is more than that. Perhaps a glimpse of one of the other lives he could have had? Jenneke as a mirror?

My take is that the fictional Jenneke serves as an early indication that Cromwell is losing a grip on the omniscience he displays in every aspect of his life; he trades in information which he uses to advance his cause. His not knowing he had a daughter seems very unlike him, and perhaps foreshadows his downfall.
