Do we know that? Did I miss this part somehow? I only recall: (very minor spoiler for latter in the book) (view spoiler), but no details about how/why.
I bring up some questions about Dazen being/staying prism so long in the last section as I didn't pay close enough attention during my Christmas trip as to what happened in what section.

We don't know it for sure. Quentin explains some of it to Kip in Chapter 55, then Kip makes his own connections, about what happens during the ceremony and why it is so secret, what happens if the previous prism is not ready to give up power, etc... I just re-read the section and Kip also wonders how there were two prisms during the false prism's war.
It's times like these I wish I had the text rather than the audio. I'm too lazy to download the whole book again to re-listen to that chapter.
:) It's times like these I am glad i use Kindle - i couldn't remember what chapter it was in, so I just did a search on "Blinding Knife". I used my audible credit for last month to buy the audio. Whispersync is so cool. Best of both worlds! They should make it so you can get the ebook for a $1.00 - $1.99 after buying the audio. Sort of an inverse of add narration for the reduced price of $3.99!

So we learn that the blinding knife is used to kill the old prism, and make the new prism. For most prisms it not only drains them of their colors and will, it causes death. For Gavin (Dazen) it caused only loss of color, not death.
As the color and will is drained from the prism, the stones on the knife glow. I assume when all 7 (9?) colors are filled, the prism elect is stabbed and embued with prism like powers, which are more than just the ability to draft colors, as there are full spectrum polychromes who are not the prism, but also his will? Is it the will that gives him the seemingly unlimited ability to continue drafting without breaking the halo?
Also, something very similar to the blinding knife (if not the original blinding knife?) was used to create shimmer cloaks.
Lastly, there is usually only one prism at a time. Presumably that prism is made with the blinding knife. Both Gavin and Dazen were prisms during the false prisms war, and presumably only the real Gavin was stabbed with the blinding knife. So Dazen's ability as prism is natural born and not given from the knife, and this might explain why when he was stabbed with the blinding knife, he only lost the ability to draft but not his life?
