When Louie's father brings home a sick newborn miniature donkey, he is determined to save his life, despite not having much luck with pets before. Under Louie's meticulous care, Winslow survives and even thrives, much to the surprise of everyone. But with neighbors complaining and Winslow growing and the local laws against keeping farm animals as pets, Louie will have to eventually give him up.

This story is in the same vein as Charlotte's Web, though I much prefer this even though less happens here. I like the characters much better and there is no anthropomorphizing, so it's all about what Louie and his friends learn through caring for Winslow. I only wish the story had been longer as I think it could have said more.
