I remember Gavin's conversation with Liam in a previous book. He admitted that he had loved Colleen and thought he could help her with her mental problems. I kind of gave him a break at that point because he was sorry that he had cheated with Colleen. So, in my mind, he wasn't a bad guy when this book started, but he was a rogue and lothario with his many sexual conquests.
That wasn't all we knew. He made a trip to Ravenscroft to check on Mena. Liam thought he was trying to seduce her, I thought he was willing to protect her from Liam if she needed protection. I was surprised to find Gavin had such a reputation as a lover with the ladies, the exact opposite of his father.
What affected me most was that he had a relationship with Colleen that preceded her marriage to Liam! There’s truly was a tragic story and the fact that he embraced her despite her mental illness spoke to his character. His later well earned reputation with women was more an expression of pain than bad behavior. He moved up several notches in my book once I knew the complete story. And, the sacrifice he tried to make for his mother was heartening.
I was surprised when we learned his relationship wasn't only during her marriage to Liam but before. I liked him from the beginning knowing that he went to check on Mena. And, of course, I loved how he was there for his mother.
Yes, I remember the scene in the library between Liam and Gavin from The Highlander. While his actions were morally questionable, I understood then and now how Gavin's feelings could have overwhelmed his better judgment when it came to Colleen. Perhaps if Liam had truly loved Colleen like he does Mena, and Gavin had still betrayed his brother, it would be different.
Colleen's obvious paranoid Schizophrenia and her suicide were tragic though. I really felt for her as well.
Oh, I also had empathy for Colleen who was trapped in her own mental illness without anyone but Gavin knowing how to handle her.
