SOLVED. Searching for an adult fiction story which could be classed as dramatic. Father takes small child back to Newfoundland after the death of his wife.

This is a long shot and I am sorry for the vagueness of the query but a friend has come up with the answer.
I am looking for a reasonable modern day book which was written in the twentieth century. I'm not sure if the mother is murdered or just dies but the child's father takes the child back to his home town. I think that in the town it snows. Very little to go on, I know, but this is bugging me so much. The book was studied in schools in Australia.
