Sharon Cox (bodleian) | 12 comments This is a long shot and I am sorry for the vagueness of the query but a friend has come up with the answer.
I am looking for a reasonable modern day book which was written in the twentieth century. I'm not sure if the mother is murdered or just dies but the child's father takes the child back to his home town. I think that in the town it snows. Very little to go on, I know, but this is bugging me so much. The book was studied in schools in Australia.
The book is the Shipping News by Annie Proulx

Sharon, please add genre and some plot details to your topic header. Threads with vague headers are closed in this large group.

Click the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, there's a "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

Is this book for teens or older adults?

Sharon, please edit your header to add genre and plot details. This is mandatory, not optional.

The header has been edited hopefully to the groups's requirements. I originally put the few details I had into the main entry. I'll try to do better if this situation arises again.
