This is a book by Roald Dalh about a girl named Matilda who is treated poorly by her horrid parents and evil head teacher Miss Trunchball. However, she has a lovely class teacher named Miss Honey who looks out for her. Matilda realises she has special powers and uses this to make her parents and miss Trunchball pay for their behaviour. The story ends happily ever after for Matilda and Miss Honey. This book could be used in the classroom to explore positive character traits and use these to make character profiles, they could create alternative endings to the story or imagine what other things Matilda could have done with her powers. Matilda could be used as an example to children for reading for pleasure.
I like this book as it explores many themes and emotions such as bravery, resilience, confidence, resourcefulness, empathy and also highlights the difference between right and wrong where we see the ‘bad’ people suffer and the ‘good’ people get rewarded, a message many children as well as many adults, would benefit from hearing.
