I just joined and am excited to find some new books to read! I'm dying of boredom and bad books! Oh, by the way, I'm Libby. :)

Hi Libby. Welcome to the group. I can promise you will not be bored here, and there are TONS of great books being read RIGHT THIS MINUTE, check out the threads!!

message 3: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Welcome Libby! Lori is right...poke through the threads and you will find plenty of good books around here. Is there a certain genre you prefer?

Efe | 181 comments Hi Libby, I'm new too and just discovered this group today. What genre of book do you enjoy? Or if that is too broad, can you name two or three books that you loved?

message 5: by Carol (new)

Carol Welcome Libby. Check out the , what does your bookshelf or shelves look like. You will get a kick out of them. The pictures are great on that thread.

jessi (infinitevantage) | 86 comments Welcome! Two books I read recently that I really enjoyed were Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Maybe you would enjoy them, too.

Laura (apenandzen) Welcome Libby!

They call me the pusher. Here's some great ones. Click on the titles to see descriptions of the book:

1. I Am the Messenger and

2. The Book Thief both by Markus Zusak

I recommend you read Messenger first, then Thief. They are both classified as YA (Young Adult) lit. Although they both could easily crossover to the adult shelves.

3. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. If you're looking for a feel-good read, something that feels like a black and white film where you just want to move in with the characters, this one's for you.

4. The Secret Life of Bees - this is about strong women, and the Civil Rights movement. Powerful, and beautifully written from the point of view of a 14-15 year-old girl.

5. The Count of Monte Cristo - if you're looking for a long book that will captivate you completely and totally, you've found it! And it moves so fast, you won't even believe you've read about 1300 pages when you're done. A thrilling read!

Those are some of my favorites from the past year. Never fear Libby - you'll never run out of book recommendations in this group.

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments Welcome, Libby!

It's hard to know what to suggest for your reading pleasure since I don't know anything about your preferrences so I'll just name a few books that have made an impression on me, OK?
The Crimson Petal and the WhiteA darkly amusing look at Victorian culture.
The Story of Junk A novel or possibly an autobiography about heroin addiction and the New York Scene in the '80s.
The Death of Vishnu The lives of a group of very different familes living in the same apartment building in Bombay as a homeless man slowly dies in the stairwell, lost in his memories and religious visions.

Aw, thanks guys! I feel more loved here then at my church. (JK) I'll take you suggestions to heart and read them. (Adventure books or any funny fiction ones are my fav since someone asked)

Amy (amycf) | 1 comments Hi Libby,
Some books I like are The Nature of Jade
The Treasure Map of Boys
Life of Pi
The Playful Way to Serious Writing
Hope there's at least one on that list
that does not leave you bored!- Amy

I have to read Brothers K and Crime & Punishment too. Have you read that one yet Lori?

message 17: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10631 comments Mod
Crime and Punishment? No, but I do own it, and it is patiently waiting its turn. I just read The Double by him tho, and --well--uhm-- not a fan of that one at all.

message 18: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Hmm...that's interesting.

Have you read anything else by Dumas? Did you read 3Musk yet?

message 19: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10631 comments Mod
Yes, 3 musketeers was great too! Not as easy to slip into as Count, and of course not as long of a commitment :)

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments How about 'The Poisonwood Bible'??!

message 21: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10631 comments Mod
Actually, I just picked up Poisonwood Bible at the salvation army today! a buck! I dont think I will get to it for the group read, but I do plan on getting to it sometime... uhm..soon...I hope!

message 22: by Pavel (last edited Sep 24, 2009 03:35AM) (new)

Pavel | 28 comments Lori, C & P and Double are so different. Double is one his first pieces of prose published, somewhat rookie writing, it was written even before death sentence, which influenced all his books, and his personality drastically. C & P is written 20 years after, there are dozen of books in-between, he only became D. as we know him by that time, and all other great novels (like karamazov Brothers, Idiot, the possessed were only laying ahead.
