I have read a book around 15 years back which was a SciFi book with the following details:

Plot
====
--Villian--
There is an alien planet in which all aliens communicate telepathetically. The villian (alien) when he is a child is subject to a test where he has to sheid everybody out with a mind shield/mental wall. The aliens use the core of "Mpul" trees as fuel and they have some creatues as their slaves to do their work. As a sidenote, its mentioned that these slaves at a latter stage rebel and kill most of the aliens.

The villian goes out in search of something and due to an accident in space falls down on earth and is held in a protective statis shield which has to be unlocked from outside to release the alien.

--Hero--
The hero is a human and has the capability to communicate telepathetically with other animals. One side effect of this is that the other creature becomes a part of his brain and there is a bit of conversation going on in his head. When the hero tries to communicate with the alien, the aliens ego is so powerful that it takes control of the hero's mind and he starts thinking that he is the alien. In the chaos the ensues, the alien too gets released from its protective shell.

The hero & the alien unwillingly travel together and they need to go to saturn to retrieve some crystal skull or something like that. The hero gains the control of his mind around the end and somehow saves the day.
