ABANDONED. YA, fantasy, transported to a different/hidden realm

I read this novel in 2010/2011. I believe that it is apart of a series. The main character is a young boy, maybe named eric? He lives with his mother and siblings (but i think i remember mention of foster families/adoption) but he somehow ends up in a different universe/realm and he’s apart of a group of kids being tested. they’re being tested to see who will be the next king or ruler. and the ruler has a scepter. i remember the tests being magical aptitude tests.
