Brandon Varnell Having grown up watching anime and reading manga, I suppose it was only natural that I would get into Japanese light novels at some point, which could be considered the Japanese version of a novella. They seem to be catching on in America, and I've managed to buy several like SAO, Aria the Scarlet Ammo, and a number of others. However, sometimes I feel like I'm one of the few who've become enamored with them. I know some groups here who share my passion, but they're small, no less than 50-200 people in total.

So, here is my question, does anyone out there aside from myself read Japanese light novels?

Eva Vanrell (evavanrell) | 7 comments Hi Brandon! I've read the first three light novels in the Twelve Kingdoms series and I loved them. The anime is one of my favorite and it was never finished, so I turned to the light novels to finish the story; I was lucky enough they were being translated into English. I think light novels will catch on a little more once more titles are translated.

I've read that one, too, and really enjoyed it. I'm currently reading To Aru Majutsu no Index, Strike the Blood, Highschool DxD, and I'm re-reading Spice and Wolf (cuz it's awesome). I've got a few more lined up, but most of the ones I want to read aren't translated yet.

I've never heard of that one before, but I'll definitely have to look it up now. It sounds like a fun read!

If you'd like to read some, here's one you might want to start off with: Spice and Wolf, Book 1 is probably one of the most well-written light novels currently being released by Yen Press, and they also have the most volumes out. I'd also suggest A Certain Magical Index, Vol. 1, Sword Art Online: Aincrad and Accel World, Vol. 1.

SAO is a pretty good LN series. If you liked that, you might also enjoy reading Accel World, Vol. 1 and A Certain Magical Index, Vol. 1. One of them is written by the same author as SAO and follows the same gamin-type storyline. The other is a sci-fi/fantasy that combines magic and science.
