Hi all - some are using CanadianContent as a place where there is not all the doom and gloom of Covid 19 so i am setting up one thread for discussion. it can be a place to post resources to help cope with isolation, share reading materials or have general discussion. Folks can decide to review the posts, or not.

I have just returned from Myrtle Beach so am working from home while i socially isolate for the next 14 days... good thing that i have my own source of reading materials... and a kobo!

Petra | 707 comments Susan, I hope you had a stress-free trip home. The news has been mentioning the problems travellers are having in order to come home.

We are self-isolating as well. Hubby isn't feeling well. We don't think its the virus but one never knows. So far, he's just tired & lethargic, with a very mild fever (intermittent). No cough or runny nose.
I am self-monitoring, which means that I can potentially go to a store if necessary but I'd prefer to stay home. We have plenty of supplies......but we have no potatoes. The Hoarders bought up all potatoes last week, except for sweet potatoes. There were plenty of them. I bought one for myself (hubby doesn't like them)…..I should have maybe bought a few more? We do have a bag of tater tots and a half bag of French fries. LOL.

I've got lots of books (Kobo and hard copy), my knitting & carving, as well as my Tai-Chi (which could use a lot of practice). I also have Goodreads, friends I can phone, the yard I could work in (weather permitting) and runs I can go on (there are routes I can run where I would meet no one and if so could easily stay 6 feet away).

I hope everyone is doing well. I will check in as often as I can to give any support and chatting that I can.

This is a good idea, Susan. It will be less isolating to stick together and keep each other informed.

it was a long drive and some stress about when to leave but we came home early but i am thankful that we are all healthy. thanks for asking!

Great to read about your plans. Here is link of book suggestions from some authors we admire: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/...

It will be a challenging time for many so it is good that we can connect remotely :)

Story (storyheart) Susan, glad to hear you were driving and not flying. Petra, I hope your husband feels better soon and that you stay healthy.

I'm joining Susan and Petra in staying indoors as I saw my dentist the day after she was at the dental conference where someone has now been diagnosed with Covid. I'm not super-worried as she was properly gloved and masked most of the time but we did stand quite close to each other chatting without her mask on as I was leaving. So, I'm staying in for one more week. I admit my heart is racing every time I get a throat tickle or have a hot flash (they're perfectly normal for my age but...)

Hurray for Kobo as I only had three library books on my bed stand when the libraries closed.

I wanted to remind anyone with a kobo that gutenberg.org has thousands of old novels to download in case you ever wanted to catch up on the classics. Is it time to read Middlemarch at last?

Here is a list of their top 100 downloads:

Petra | 707 comments That is really heartwarming! It's wonderful to see that people are helping each other as much as they can in these times. I wish the News would report on some of these things as well as the more awful hoarding issues. They are starting to, I think. There are some instances of people in Europe exercising together from balconies, singing together from balconies, etc. It lifts the heart.

✿✿✿May | 672 comments I am trying to stay positive by reminding myself this is downtime to spend for me and my family.
I am still at work this week, as provincial courts is still deemed "essential service" and I still have to prepare the cases that are coming through. Starting tomorrow, we are officially on a rotation so I only need to go in once a week and working from home otherwise. Will see how this goes. We are definitely practicing "social distancing" at work, most people eating their lunches at their desks and no more than 2 people in an office, etc.
I am most frustrated with Goodlife and my yoga studio closed, as keeping up fitness has been very important to fight any virus/cold, Found some old workout DVD's and have been doing that.
I have no shortage of books at home, LOL!! Now I can finally go through my own stash versus checking out the library inventory! I can probably self-isolate for 10+ years if I don't buy one single book, but who can resist Indigo offering "free shipping"??
Stay positive and stay healthy everyone!

some more resources for online events... sad to see that the FOLD festival will not be running as usual but great that they could modify the program and make it open for more to enjoy: https://www.cbc.ca/books/canadian-wri...

Connie Paradowski | 62 comments Thanks Susan G for the link. Our local festival unfortunately had to cancel. Was scheduled for mid April. It was the right decision but I was counting down the days to our preview party slated for next week and the festival mid April. Next year seems such a long time from now.

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments Crazy times we are living in, but the response is commendable. I think it will be noted in history so it's cool to be living it.

That being said, it's very typical of modern society to turn a tangible, physical threat into an invisible emotional toll. I know we are all facing similar challenges, but I'm finding it difficult to work from home with 8 billable hours a day (minimum), entertain bored children, homeschool them (and research and prepare said homeschooling), plus all the typical concerns about COVID-19.

May we all stay healthy both mentally and physically!

@Allison hikes - it is certainly an experience working from home with the kids home! I hear your pain and have had many teleconferences where i have been shushing people already. That being said, i am thankful to be able to keep working but i think it will change the way we provide home care into the future. on the plus side, my kids must be bored as they have super cleaned their rooms... without being asked!

I love how independent book stores are offering home delivery and pick up.

How is everyone doing? How is your husband Petra?

I sadly closed my LFL today. their website had cleaning instructions and with working at home, I just don't have the time to continually sanitize the books so am taking a pause.
