Charles Fetters (charlesfetters) | 12 comments My next novel will be loosely based on the rock band Rush's 1974 album "2112" and the finding of the Golden Guitar. This epic journey to return the guitar to its rightful place will be an underground adventure that will take the MCs through a very bazaar world. There will be all kinds of different creatures both hostile and friendly.
What I need are unusual ideas and challenges that my characters will run into. Like upside-down rain. The finding that most of what exists on the surface of the Earth is fake like the sun is just a mirrored reflection of the Earth's core. All designed to keep humans on the surface and not coming underground. Anyone giving me a great idea that I use will be listed in the book's credits.

M.L. | 1129 comments Hi Charles, I think you have a lot to work with already. I'm not familiar with "2112." I'm more interested in the guitar itself and transporting it. Is it electric? I think so. So, is it in a case? If not, what happens when someone bumps a string: does it set off a weird note that does even weirder things. What would happen if someone tried to play it, even without an amp. Maybe one of the transporters thinks he's Jimi Hendrix and zaps himself, or summons something.

Still, though, I think you already have a colorful set up and can go with it as-is. Good luck!

Charles Fetters (charlesfetters) | 12 comments Thanks for your response M.L.
No, it's the original guitar created by the Gods thousands of years ago. The Wall Street overlords found it and tried to destroy it more than a hundred years ago. Their purpose was to have tighter control over the masses. No one alive on the surface of the Earth has ever heard any form of music. Before music can once again grace the planet the Golden Guitar must be returned to its rightful place. To get it to that place they must take it thousands of miles through the underground world where they meet and so many strange creatures. Some friendly and some dangerous. What I need is ideas for these strange creatures and bazaar landscapes.

Jay Greenstein (jaygreenstein) | 279 comments Umm... The guitar dates back to around 1590, had 10 strings, and instead of regular metal frets, its ligatures are tied like those found on a lute.

You might want to rethink the instrument.

Charles Fetters (charlesfetters) | 12 comments I never thought of making the guitar itself different with the exception of being made of gold. I wrote this idea down in my notebook. I will add your name Jay with it. Thanks for the ideas.

D. Thrush | 187 comments It sounds like a unique and interesting story idea. (Bizarre, instead of bazaar, which is a place.) I like the idea of opposites. Waterfalls that flow upward. Rocks that float. Clouds you walk on. Bridges that you hang on as monkey bars. Mazes. Creatures that require a password to continue or riddle involving music. Mirrors that reflect the future or something else. Lightening that strikes upward from the ground. Let us know how it goes!

Charles Fetters (charlesfetters) | 12 comments D. Yes, this is the type of land they will be traveling through. Areas are "bizarre" in nature and strange to navigate. My idea is the true operation of daily life on Earth is run from the underground. What we humans see in our daily lives is just a mirage designed by the underworld to keep us content. You have so many great ideas that I'm definitely keeping track of this post.
Thank you.

Charles Fetters (charlesfetters) | 12 comments I will keep you posted. I'm thinking about starting the first draft in April's Camp NaNoWiMo.

Jay Greenstein (jaygreenstein) | 279 comments Something to keep in mind: It's great to have the protagonist encounter interesting things and situations. But, are they happening for "happening's" sake, as individual adventures, or are they moving the primary plot and integral to it? I mention it because if they don't directly drive the primary thread, you're writing a series of short stories, loosely connected by an overriding theme.

There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but the structure is different from that of a novel and needs to be taken into account..

Charles Fetters (charlesfetters) | 12 comments Most of my novels are natural disaster stories. A person just sits down and writes it in chronological order. I have always thought that High Fantasy writers were the better of all writers. It's taking me 15 years to finally attempt this. In many ways, it feels like my first novel, like I have no idea what I'm doing. I thought that many of the strange events seen in this story would simply be walked by like walking in a zoo. Others would get tricky but the last hurtle would be hell on earth.
