We All Looked Up? About an asteroid/meteorite that is going to hit earth.

Read the book in the 80’s or early 90's. The book is probably from late 60’s or 70’s. I remember it was about some extraterrestrial being (or perhaps a planet/comet) set for destroying earth and some scientists had contact with it (I remember letters on screens) trying to get it to change it mind (or course). One of them said something about 'if an ant asked you to not step on it wouldn’t you keep from doing it?’ Something like that. I thought it was The Andromeda Strain, but apparently not.
