Blue | 4 comments When I was young, possibly around 2007 or 2008, there was a particular book in school that frightened me. Nonetheless, it was a children's book, and I do remember reading it/catching a glimpse of it every so often. I don't exactly remember what the cover looked like, but I think an illustration of the character was on the back of it, too, maybe below a blurb. It may have been in a forest setting. While I can't remember the title, I think the name of the character might've been in it. It was a small, thin book, and I remember the main character being a short, bipedal fuzzy creature. It had black fur covering its entire body with the exception of its face. The character had a sort of surprised expression, I'm sure, with an open gaping mouth in an 'O' form. I'm pretty sure it also had sharp teeth, but that might just be my memory messing with me, because I don't think it was intended to look scary. It either had two horns or ears on the top of its head, also covered in fur. The book, looking back, was probably an old one, and I'd say it most resonated vibes of some 1960's children's books like Where The Wild Things Are, some of the illustrations in James and the Giant Peach, and its closest resemblance was A Bargain for Francis (though this is not the character or book). Much more simple looking, though. My memory might be fuzzy, so I could've recalled some details incorrectly, but I'd appreciate any sort of help finding it. Thank you!

SamSpayedPI | 2335 comments I was about to say, "It sounds like Max from Where the Wild Things Are" but I guess you have already considered that.

Blue | 4 comments I have, though it's a good guess because that character did greatly resemble Max (at least, some of the features like poses Max did and the overall shape of him).

JennAnn | 28 comments “Five Children and It”, by E. Nesbit?
The “It” of the title is an ill-tempered, furry little creature, with eyes on long horns l, which it can move in and out, like telescopes.

JennAnn | 28 comments To continue... 🙂. E. Nesbit (who also wrote “The Railway Children”) called her creature a “psammead”. If you do an image search for that, you might find the picture you remember. “Five Children and It” was originally published in the early part of the twentieth century, but it has remained popular and has been adapted for television. Via Google I discovered that a follow-up story “The Return if the Psammead”, was also written, though much later, by Helen .Cresswell. To me, the illustration on the cover of this book looks closer to Max’s creatures (and more frightening!) than some of those for the original book.
