This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread will open for submissions on March 15 and will close at Midnight Eastern time on April 5. Voting will start the next day April 6 and will close at the end of the day on April 12. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Summer Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and he/she must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments will be deleted.

Scrabbled!

My mother and I played a lot of Scrabble when I was growing up. We were both avid readers with extensive vocabularies, so we were fairly well-matched despite the age difference. In homage to that auspicious childhood past-time, I’ve created a challenge based on Scrabble that I hope will be just as much fun.

This is a three-book task. No books with Children or Kids as a MPG may be used for this task. The total page count for all three books must be at least 750 pages.

Make your choices for the first two books carefully, because they will both affect your choices for the next book. Much like the game of Scrabble itself, careful attention to both letters and numbers will lead you to success.

1 = A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U
2 = D, G
3 = B, C, M, P
4 = F, H, V, W, Y
5 = K
8 = J, X
0 = Q, Z

BOOK 1: Using the first three letters in your readerboard name (skip symbols and numerals), find the corresponding numerals in the above chart of Scrabble tiles values (if your readerboard name doesn’t have at least three letters, use a 0 for each missing letter). Arrange those numerals any way you like and read one book with this page count +/- 10 pages. The author’s last name must have a minimum of three letters.

BOOK 2: Using the first three letters of the author’s last name for book 1 (spaces determine names), repeat this procedure and read one book with this new page count +/- 20 pages. The title must have a minimum of three letters.

BOOK 3: Using the title of book 2 (all words count, including articles, but skip numerals and symbols), repeat this procedure and read one book with this new page count +/- 30 pages.

Example:
My readerboard name starts with APR, so I end up with 1-3-1.
I choose The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli at 133 pages (131 + 2).

The author’s last name for my first book starts with MAC, so I end up with 3-1-3.
I choose The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera at 320 pages (331 - 11).

The title of my second book begins with THE, so I end up with 1-4-1.
I choose The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë at 441 pages (411 + 30).
My total page count is 133 + 320 + 441 = 894 pages.

Iulia (iuliadt) | 142 comments Wheel of Life/ Balance Wheel

As a coach, I often work with clients who are not very sure where to start their journey and how to define their objectives. One of the tools we are using to give clarity and access creative perspectives is the wheel of life (or balance wheel).

The wheel of life represents our life as a circle, divided into 8 areas, described below (in no particular order).
The exercises on the wheel of life are about achieving balance, in all areas, so that our lives roll in harmony, like a spinning wheel, by identifying areas where we are happy with things and areas where we feel we need to improve. I've designed this task as an extension to the coaching wheel-of-life, hope you'll enjoy it, too!

1. Career/ Profession
2. Wealth
3. Family
4. Relationships/ Friends
5. Health/ Fitness
6. Hobby
7. Spirituality/ Personal Growth
8. Community/ Environment

This is a three-book task. No books with Children or Kids as a MPG may be used for this task. The total page count for all three books must be at least 750 pages.

Book 1. Choose one area from the wheel of life that you are happy about, in your life, and read a book (only fiction) where the main character is defined by a strong interest in the same area. If the character's interest in the area isn't obvious from the book's description on GR, explain how he/she fits your chosen area.

E.g. area = 7. Spirituality/ Personal Growth. You may read a book where the main character is a monk or an adventurer in search of something.
The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco

Book 2. Choose one area from the wheel of life where you would like to improve things in your life. Read a non-fiction book describing that area.

E.g. area = 3. Family. You may read a book about parenting or how to be a better spouse or about generation gap.
Attachment, by John Bowlby

Book 3. To honor the purpose of the wheel of life, which is to create balance between all the areas, read a book that has a wheel on the cover. It can be any wheel, natural or stylized, as long as it performs the function of rolling/ turning.

E.g. No Sweat How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness by Michelle Segar

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments trishhartuk's idea - Remembering Neil Peart

One of my favourite bands is Rush. Sadly, the drummer, Neil Peart, died this January. During his career with the band, Rush won nine Junos (a Canadian music award) and was nominated for seven Grammys, although it never won one. Rush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 2013.

This is a three-book task. No books with Children or Kids as a MPG may be used. The total page count for the three books must be at least 750 pages.

1. Rush is (or, sadly, perhaps was) a proudly Canadian band. Read a book set at least 50% in Canada.

2. Peart joined Rush in 1974, and the Rush R40 box set was released in September 2014, commemorating 40 years since their first album, Rush, was released. His last live performance with the band was on the R40 tour, in August 2015. Read a book written between 1974 and 2015 inclusive.

3. As well as being an amazing drummer, Peart was also Rush’s lyricist, and among other things, wrote the lyrics for my one of my favourite rock tracks ever: Xanadu, based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Colerdige, which was first published in 1816. Read a book with an MPG of classics or retellings.

Entertainment Flashback - 1970

I love looking back and seeing what was popular in "the olden days". As we have been celebrating awards in the entertainment industry why not go back fifty years and see what was popular at that time.

This is a three-book task. No books with Children or Kids as a MPG may be used for this task. The total page count for all three books must be at least 750 pages.

Book 1:
The winning theme at the Oscars was definitely western as John Wayne won a best actor nomination for True Grit, Midnight Cowboy was best picture, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid won for best original score.
Read a book that has "western" listed as a MPG.

Book 2
The Grammys in 1970 honoured Simon and Garfunkel as they won Record and Album of the year with "Bridge over Troubled Water". This iconic album featured many classic songs and popularized the talents of this duo.
Read a book that is award winning that was written by two authors.

Book 3
The Emmys in 1970 celebrated the dramatic series "Marcus Welby, MD". The show featured Robert Young who played a family physician who showed a remarkable bedside manner.
Read a book that has a medical theme, either doctors or nurses as main characters or a main character with a significant medical condition.
