I thought this was a great start to the series. While I was reading it, I was wondering how Mercy and Truman could start a relationship with her living many hours away. I like that she has applied for the position in the local FBI office. Mercy very much reminded me of Kate Burkholder. Both came from a family that isn't the norm in society. Both were shunned by their family for not toeing the line. Both killed someone when they were teenagers and the murders were covered up by the family. Both left home, went to school, and became a cop who returned to their hometown in a professional capacity. I love the Kate Burkholder series and I hope that the Mercy Kilpatrick series will be just as good.
Great comparison, Robin. I like the similarities you've drawn here between Mercy and Kate.I look forward to the next book in this series! Not sure how long I can wait to begin reading it.
PS -- Thanks, again, Jonetta, for getting questions out to us to help us give form to some (at least for me) amorphous thoughts.
Oh, Robin, that’s a fantastic comparison! Yes, there are so many similarities to Kate Burkholder (the character, not the series).
I think this was a great start to the series and it was so timely given what’s going on today.
Charlene, you’re so very welcome! I imagined that the things that were though provoking for me would probably be so for everyone reading this story.

I love your questions Jonetta. They make me think about the characters and events in the story. Great job!
So this showed up in my FB feed this morning. I don't know if it is random or because I was reading about Mercy Kilpartrick. LOLhttps://www.askaprepper.com/homemade-...
My parents still talk about growing up during the Depression; the Sears catalog pages were put to this use in the outhouse; they domention that the shiny pages were left for last!
Really enjoyed this story, it was easy reading and a good set up for future books. I especially liked the slow burn in Mercy and Truman's relationship. Looking forward to book 2.
Thanks for the questions and the buddy read, Jonetta and ladies.
Thanks Jonetta. I love buddy reading, it adds so much to whatever you're reading to discuss other readers' opinions.
I'm late starting this series, but I really enjoyed it. My library did not have any of these. I recently saw that they were on sale for $1.99 each so I quickly bought them and started. So glad I did.
