Before this book, had you heard the term “prepper?” Did you know what it meant?

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments I remembered that term from Y2K. Some people thought the world would end. Others thought computers/other technology would no longer work. Therefore, they had to be prepared.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments I knew what it meant. Because the State of California is going to separate from the mainland of the US when the Big One hits, we all are preppers here to some degree, but not to the degree that Preppers take things.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments I think I maybe had heard of it, but then I wondered whether it was related to Preppies :-)

Anyway, forty years ago I knew some preppers, although that terminology would have been survivalists. I might even have resembled one in the 1970s when we started growing everything we ate organically.

I’d never heard of the term before. I’d always thought they were survivalists.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3484 comments I heard of preppers. Years ago we were semi survivalists. Now I wish I stayed a little more diligent. I do have a solid pantry that can keep us fed for a couple months. Until recently we thought it was hurricane prep. We are thinking about expanding our supplies.

Christina T (crysteena73) | 109 comments I also viewed them as survivalists and preppers was a new term to me. I didn't even connect Y2K until Robin mentioned it but you are absolutely right. I actually was thinking when the COVID19 pandemic started and people were hoarding toilet paper and rubbing alcohol they were acting like Y2K and then I had to explain to my 23 year old nephew what Y2K was LOL. I understand the need to prepare but some of them took it way too far.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) Yes, I've definitely heard the term (there is a TV show dedicated to them now) and since the onset of the covid 19 pandemic they must be in their element.

Lisa, I’m sure they feel vindicated.

I hadn't heard them called preppers before. I'm familiar with the term survivalists.

Samantha | 6 comments I had gathered what it meant in the context of the story but I have never heard of that term before.

Oh they are definitely in their element now. I can only imagine.

Ellen | 14 comments I've heard of survivalists but not preppers.
