E M M A | 1540 comments Name: Jonah Rhys Deighton
Age: 24

Appearance:

(view spoiler)

Height: 6'2
Weight: 174, most is muscle mass
Eyes: soft brown- hazel
Hair: brown, scruffy

Personality:
Jonah has no idea how to socialize with other than his ship mates, having never interacted really with any one else. Women? Strangers. He had been to few bars before after returning from a particularly long fishing trip, and slept with a woman or two here and there, but there was never love, never an interest. He tends to attract several women with his mysterious shady character, but in truth, Jonah just is clueless. The fisherman tends to keep to himself, his heart being at sea. Often in down time, he is seen scribbling in a tattered journal and wondering about what is beyond the murky dark waters. He is still a young boy at heart, his curiousity usually getting the best of him. Jonah does what he pleases, knowing no manners with his fisherman attitudes.
-quiet
-shady
-curious
-intriguing
-rude at times
-determination

History:
Jonah was abandoned as a single child when he was four. His father, a fisherman, had disappeared at sea, and his mother couldn't handle being without him. She "disappeared", and Jonah never saw her again. At such a tender age, Jonah had no way to take care of himself. In the small seaside town of Kemp, his fathers fishing company took the young boy in and raised him as their own. Jonah grew up on boats at sea, helping with the reel and baits. Being at sea for weeks at a time and never engaging in proper schooling or social interaction with other children his age, Jonah became a sheltered man. Even after he turned a legal age to leave and find himself work, Jonah stuck to the fishing trade. He holds on to the hope that he would be able to find his fathers shipwreck, or at least a sign. Jonah has grown a strong bond with the sea, and knows it better than land. His ship captain and four crews men have formed a tight knit relationship, and they are the closest thing he had ever had to a family. The crew always passes along stories of myths of pirates and mermaids and sea monsters, but Jonah never believed it. It was stupid, he thought, and he had never seen proof. However, after one of his ship members had disappeared with an eerie note about sailing off in one of the lifeboats to follow what was described as a mermaid, Jonah was curious. The sea was enchanting, and he had begun to become extremely curious about its depths and secrets.

Jonah continues doing what he knows best, his usual fishermen duties with only few visits to local shops or bars.

Family:
None

Other:
He is a fisherman, and picks up other odd jobs when he is on land

E M M A | 1540 comments Jonah woke up early that Thursday morning, a gloomy cold fog settled around the boat as it drifted silently through the waters. He hadnt slept too well the night before with a stomachache, wishing he had never tried Egort's odd-cod dish. It had originally been the captains turn to cook, but he had "other duties" to tend to. They were two days into their fishing run, setting down their usual crab and lobster traps and emptying the ones they had out out a few days before. Today was a real fishing day, where they would be dropping the nets. If they had particularly good catches, Jonah even considered grabbing one of the fishing piles they kept stored in the supply closet.

Sitting up in the small cabin he shared with three others on bunk beds attached securely to the wall with an empty space between the beds. To any other person, the place reeked of brine, fish, and body odor- but to the crew, it was home. Jonah removed the covers, yawning and taking his time to change out of his long johns into his work clothes. He slipped on an old short sleeve tshirt boasting some fishing event a few years back, some durable waterproof pants, and thick rubber boots with no socks. He grabbed his rain poncho to protect him from the morning fog, ducking out of the bedroom quietly to go brush his teeth and relieve himself.

After taking care of his morning routine and huddling in his bright yellow deck windbreaker jacket, he relieved Adam of his night shift and took over the steering of the steady ship. It was on auto course, but Jonah watched for any rocks or seaweed forests that would damage their ship. They were taking a new route today, one that Jonah had been hesitant about only because their was a small island nearby, so the sea level became relatively low at one point, and jagged rocks protruded from the surface. No worries, his captain had said, the man who had become like a second father to him. No worries, because this was the place all the fish hid out when the sea got colder, due to hot air vents close by.

So Jonah had backed down on the issue over dinner last night, not so sure it had been a good idea. The island was hardly visible through the lifting gaze an hour later at 0800, the crew now fully awake and rushing around to get ready. Breakfast was served, and this time Gustavo had offered his service to cook. Nobody protested. By noon, they were ready to lower the nets. The island was truly beautiful, tiny, no doubt. It was untouched by humans, and Jonah felt a dying curiosity to explore that island one day. It was very well possible, maybe after they brought their catch in that week. The medium sized fishing vessel had managed to maneuver the reported jagged rocks, which didnt seem to be as bad as some had warned them. Whatever.

Jonah squeezed his rope tightly, steadying the net as the captain watched over the waters that gently tossed under them, shiny silver scales reflecting the sunlight. It was a good day indeed. "A-and.... DROP!" The captain hollored in a sort of obnoxious drill Sargent voice, and the crew working on the ropes of the heavy net complied. Sutton caught the rope when the captain signaled, letting the net sink in to the water just enough to catch the majority. The boat began to move forward, against the current the fish had been swimming in, and the captains face shone with pride. In his bright red jacket with his last name on the back, the captain cheered along with the crew for their job well done. With the economy worsening every day and their catches having been quite poor the last few months, it was an accomplishment indeed.

Sutton celebrated merely with a smile, nodding to his excited crew mates. They had spotted several other seas of scales as well, which they could make a living out of. "Bring up the net!" The captain shouted, and Jonah's heavy boots squelched on the wet deck as he he ran for the crank. The ropes were adjusted, and a generator turned the gears of the heavy load. They could only watch in see as the particularly heavy net flopped with a mass of tuna and albacore, with a few exotics in between. The net was lowered onto the "fish deck", where the catches were always released and the men would get to work gutting them.

The captain signaled for the boys to take the load easy, curiousity sparking in his eyes. The man had seen a hand. "Hurry up! Loosen it!" The captain was impatient, but so was everyone else. The rope was undone in A hurry, and out dropped hundreds of fish. And... A mermaid. At first, everyone was completely stunned. She was beautiful, with her wavy pink and purple locks wet against her fair skin, her blue eyes wide and innocent. Jonah found himself entranced by her beauty, and so did every other crew member. He was intrigued, incredulous, shocked that a real mermaid was sitting before their eyes in their catch. The other men, however, had different thoughts, ones that Jonah couldn't believe.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments Rachel stretch some after the long swim from there other place they were staying. She was happy to be sleeping in her other home since they moved back and forth and a lot. They wanted to avoid fisherman. And they normally don't come out here where they were. They was a loud sound coming above on the oceans surface. She bit her lip what could she do. Rachel heard of warnings about staying away from ships and she was too deep and safe where she was but she wanted to see what it was herself.

The older mermaids were talking about relocating to a much safer place. She looked at the crowd. She smiled to herself as it was her chance to go to the surface. She convinced herself that she would be right back and no one would notice that she even left the their home. The sound was still far away she could take her time getting up there and see all the fish and other ocean wildlife here.

As she started going up to the surface she saw light coming in. Through this light there were schools of fish that liked it closer to the surface where it was nice and warm. She smiled as the warmth of he sunlight hit her and she was even at the surface. She turned around in a circle dazed by all the wildlife here. A loud splash made her back up as she saw a huge net fall down in the ocean.

Thoughts of excitement and adventure but also worry raced in and out her brain this could be bad really bad. Then it could be good. She could just touch the net and see how feels then go right back to her ocean home nothing would happen. She swam a little closer to the net and touched it ran her her slender hand on the net. She smiled and turned around and realized her tail was caught in the holes of the net. This was the worse idea sho ever had. She was caught and she couldn't do anything about it.

Mixed voices were coming as she was going up. Her tail started to move back and forth trying to get lose. Her attempts were futile because she wasn't getting out of it. She didn't go to the surface much. The sunlight blinded her eyes as she landed on a deck of the ship. All eyes were on her. Her heart started to race. Men she would want to sing but all of these people were innocent and didn't deserve to die.

The scales on her tail were drying out that meant she would have to wait until the next full moon which was like a month. She would be on land for a full month that was the most exciting thing unless if they killed her. She was naked now and she curled into the net. "H-h-i" She whispered in a shaky voice.

Her eyes wonder to the bright blue sky and the white clouds in that looked like fluffy pillows. Then birds flying in the sky. She then looked back to the eyes that were on her. A light smile was on her face. She hoped they didn't kill her. "Your not going to turn me into that stuff called fish sticks." She asked.

Recalling stories that she was told when she was younger that all sailors were mean hateful and will kill you at any chance they get. That turned you into fish sticks then it you with a greasy salty things called French Fries."I'm not tasty I don't go with French Fries." She said. She was wrong like always they will have to notice she is gone at after the meeting.

E M M A | 1540 comments Jonah looked on with amazement, the crank under his hand. He was rooted to the spot, a settled hush over the entire crew. They simply stared at the girl, watching with curiousity as the scales dried and disappeared in the bright sunlight. Jonah gasped softly to himself as she became completely naked. He'd seen women before, but it felt just wrong just then. The crew began to stir, a few of the worse ones whistling at their catch. The captains eyes glimmered with greed, fairly interested at what profit he could gain from the young girl. She seemed harmless, absolutely vulnerable as she sat atop a mound of fish still flapping on the deck. Jonah refused to look st the girl, embarassed for how the others were acting. Some hadn't been on land in weeks, some hadn't seen their wives or girlfriends for just as long. He didn't like where it was all going, startled when the captain stomped down from the top deck to the fish deck in this obnoxious rubber boots he wore all the time.

The girl spoke up as the crowd parted to let the captain pass through, sitting in a circle that shrunk by the minute. Adam and a few others snickered deviously as the girl spoke up, her voice wavering and soft spoken. She was saying something odd about fish sticks, and if he hadn't felt so uneasy, he'd have at least cracked a smile. Jonah now wss curious of what was to happen to the mermaid, his eyes flicking over to the water that rippled as the ship floated on its surface. We're there more? Could he toss her back overboard, save her from an unfortunate end? Jonah stepped into the circle, squeezing between Egort and Adam to the side of the girl. The captain stood directly in front of the pink haired beauty, his hands on his hips. He towered a good six feet over the pile of fish, peering down at her with a broken smile.

"What's your name, dearie?" He cooed, kneeling to her height. Jonah held his breath, refusing to believe what was happening. To the captain, the girl would be a perfect oppurtunity to take advantage of, then either keep for his satisfaction, or earn publicity. For Egort, he had nothing but brutal and disgusting ideas in mind for the young woman. Jonah? Jonah wanted her off the ship. Now. He never wanted any trouble, and he was afraid for what the mermaid could do to the captains head. This ship, this lifestyle- this was all Jonah had. He had no education, no family. This was all he had lefr, and it was the only way he could keep a meager living for his clothes and other necessities. The captain paid him poorly having taken advantage of the fact that Jonah was otherwise homeless, always smacking Jonah across the face whenever he mentioned leaving for another company or asking for a raise so he could start attending school.

The captain stood up with a gleam in his eye, scanning the crowd meticulously. "Listen- UP, boys! Hey, eyes over here, junior!" He snapped , slapping a newer recruit across the cheek to take his attention off what was sitting on their fish. "We sail back for land tonight, she's gonna make us rich!" A loud cheer of hurrahs sounded, and Jonah swallowed a lump in his throat. He knew it. Hugging his windbreaker closer to him, Jonah watched the captain somberly. This was it. He'd have to find a place for himself after this. The captain would no doubt sell his shipliner, his company, then buy that seaside mansion he always talked about. "Clean the fish, pack them up, and if I catch any, any of you near the girl..." he trailed off, snarling. Jonah clenched his jaw, knowing that chaos would break out at some point or another between the other 20 men. The captain made a slit throat motion with his finger directed at Egort, who was known for trouble, before whirling around to face Jonah.

He could smell the captains sour coffee breath in his face, doing his best not to lose his stomach. "And you ," the captain gripped Jonah's arm, dragging him forward as the rest looked on enviously. "You watch her, don't let her get away. Do you understand? Odnt let any of your little buddies touch her either. And if I catch you canoodling with her, you're off. This. Ship. Do I make myself clear!" The captain roared, spit flying in Jonah's face. As the captains son that he never had, Jonah had been the only one the captain trusted to watch over his prize. "Yes, sir!" Jonah shouted, some hesitation in his voice as he felt the glares of the others on his neck. Jonah could put up a fight, he was handy with a gun, but he jsut wished he hadn't been assigned such responsibility. "Don't screw up... get her dressed, and keep her in one of the lower bunks. Don't let her out of your sight!" The bigger man hissed for Jonah's ears only, before knocking his shoulder briskly. "Get back ti work!" The captain barked, stomping up to his post on the upper deck to tell the navigator what the plan was. Some crew members reluctantly moved away, whispering and talking excitedly about the girl.

Egort whistled at the mermaid as he began ti gather the fish near her feet, his eyes glazing over her body. "Hello, Rachel," he purred, winking flirtatiously. It was more than Jonah could handle, and taking advantage of his authority and favor from the captain, Jonah smacked Egort on the back of the head like he had seen uncle do many times before. "Get back to work, and leave her alone," he seethed, seeing Egort's nostrils flare as his jaw clenched. Every muscle went taut, and Jonah knew he should be expecting to have his throat slit in the middle of the night. Egort muttered curses with fearful glances back at the captain, who glared through the glass windows of the ship control center, warningly. Jonah looked on with satisfaction as Egort retreated, off to gut whatever fish he had gathered in his hands. Jonah then offered his hand to the naked girl, before thinking better of it and draping his bright yellow jacket around her bare shoulders. "Im Jonah, " he said softly, helping her stand hesitantly.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments The wondering eyes of the men were more than she could handle. She didn't know what was going to go on. She knew they were probably thinking of dirty thought. More stories of men taking over woman but she never thought she was going to be of those girls. She could kill all of the men easily but since she didn't like killing she wouldn't do. She looked down to see that she was sitting on fish. She jumped back. These were the fish that she just saw moments ago swimming in the ocean water causing no harm at all. And now they were here on this deck and they were going to dry out and die and become fish sticks. That was mean and rude. Then this guy in front of her was talking to her. She didn't like he seemed mean and rude. She just wanted to go home and tell her mom that she was right even if that meant on giving up on finding and love and becoming a normal person once in her life anything to get away from him and the rest of these men.

His teeth looked broken and he smelt bad to her. He looked like he hadn't shower for days. The stench was awful or was it the smell of these dying fish and the the dying fish of the past. She didn't know which. She then turned to see three guys starting at her from the side. She felt like an amusement for these lonely sailors maybe it would be better to put them out of there misery and kill them but they could have family and friends back on land and that would be mean. Most of these guys looked like the worked to hard. Maybe having a girl on deck would do them some good and she could say she helped sailors and didn't kill them.

The thoughts of making me them rich. What would they do to her if they know she can only change on the full moon then what would happen. Maybe they knew that. She couldn't make these people rich at all. She couldn't change at all. She had a feeling this captain wouldn't like it. She took a deep breath. She could still find love and be happy. She just had to escape. Plans started to turning in her head. Help she will need help there had to be someone on here that could help her and that was sweet and kind. Someone who would help her escape and maybe she could help the person in return. If it came down to it she will kill everyone. She couldn't think of that because that wasn't her.

Orders were being barked here and there. She saw a guy coming towards her. A hand to help her up. She was shaking some. She didn't like the idea being naked in front of all these people."Are you going to get me some clothes Jonah." She asked softly. She looked down not knowing what to expect from him all he guys here seemed to stare at her and look at her like a toy. She wasn't no toy unless if you wanted to end at the bottom of ocean. "Are you guys going to water those fish they will die. They need to go back in the ocean." She said. She looked up slowly. Her big blue eyes were wide. "They did nothing wrong to you at all." She said. "You can't just kill innocent creatures and kidnapped girls." She paused. "No one will believe you guys that I'm a mermaid they will just think you all are a bunch of crazy sailors who probably were out in the ocean to long and had way too much sea water." She said. She was trying her best to wrap herself up with her arms until she got clothes on.

"You guys also act if you never saw a girl before." She said. She ignored the guy who walked away from them. He seemed just like the captain. "I would say its unfit for guys to be out here to long. Some of you probably lose families and love ones because of these there is more to life than the sea." She said. She didn't know if this was true but she hope this was true. She wanted to get away from the sea but not like this.

E M M A | 1540 comments Jonah frowned as the girl mentioned the fish on the deck, his heart shattering internally. She had no idea, did she? "Those fish... we need them to die," he swallowed, saying it quietly. He grabbed Rachel arm as she stood up shakily on her new legs, supporting her to walk barefooted on the slippery deck. He used his own body to shield Rachel from seeing Egort and Adam gutting and icing a pile of fish one by one. There wss blood on their gloves, and the last thing he needed was for Rachel to panic. "I'll get you some pants, let's get you inside," he murmured softly, escorting her down a set of stairs to enter the ship. Jonah did his best to ignore her questions, taking in slow breaths. How else was he supposed to explain things to her? They uprooted fish from their homes in masses, killed them, then sold to others to eat the fish? Would she think they'd do the same to her?

"Watch your step," Jonah cautioned, stepping over the risen door jam of the ships small doorway, ducking his head as they entered a long corridor. There were doors and hallways this way and that, and iron railings where there were walkways for safety. "Alot of these men... they haven't seen a girl, their wives, girlfriends... in several months..." he stated plainly, sucking a breath in to hollow his cheeks. They turned left into another wide hallway, his boots echoing on the walls. "You best not walk off with any of them, it's not safe," he warned, pushing open a heavy metal door to reveal his tidy bedroom shared with another recruit. "This is how we earn a living... some live here, on this boat, some don't even have families," Jonah muttered bitterly, shutting the door with a bang behind him.

There was a steel bed bolted to the floor on either side of the small square room, sheets, a light comforter, and a small white pillow set up neatly on each bed. Three port windows were at the far wall, two desks directly underneath them also bolted to the floors. They were bare with all his belongings locked in the drawer. The few clothes that he owned were stored in the closet he and the other boy shared, and that was where Jonah headed for Rachel clothes. He already didn't have enough clothes to begin with in his impoverished state, he'd never even seen anything nicer than 50$ before. His clothes were alway hand me downs from the bigger sailors who could afford new stuff, so the majority of his clothes had holes and stains and rips and blemishes. "This should do," Jonah reappeared, turning to face Rachel with a pair of his nicest pants, that he had saved up for and bought. They were waterproof in texture, and there was a pair of black thermal pants in his other hand. "Wear these," Jonah handed the clothes to Rachel, before turning to busy himself somehow to distract himself from the pain of giving away his prized belongings. Because Jonah was a gentleman and just couldnt bear the thought of giving the poor girl a pair of sea water smelling old fish blood stained pair of pants.

onceuponatimeareview | 8405 comments "You don't need to them to die you want them to die that's two different things there." She said softly knowing they were killing them. She wasn't stupid just because she lived under the sea her whole life and heard awful stories of like this one right here. She heard awful things about fishermen but never thought they were true. Most of the stories were told by crazy old mermaids who lived three times as old as she is or more. Most mermaids lives extend about 3 life spans longer than the regular human being unless if they broke the curse until then they live for a pretty long time. Also if they get caught by humans most don't come back. Rachel always wonder what happened to the mermaids who get caught. Some say they get killed others say they kill themselves before they get back because they couldn't take life without being under the sea. Rachel didn't know she was afraid she was going to find out unless if she escaped them. She had to get out in fear of what will happen to her if they find out she can only turn back into a mermaid on the next full moon.

Rachel smiled at Jonah. He was being awfully kind to her. She didn't want to slip and fall and land on the mixture of fish guts and blood. She probably wouldn't get the stink out for a while. "This is no life for anyone there is tons of jobs out there instead of killing poor innocent sea creatures you never did anything wrong to you. Most of these guys here are probably greedy or too prideful to leave here. Well leaving here would most likely do all of them a great deal of good. I mean if I married any of these people I sure wouldn't want them coming home stinking like this." She said. She looked at him. "Well those people who live here on the boat should find another job because they are wasting all their time and energy doing nothing but fishing and probably getting paid next to nothing." She flinched at the door banging behind them. Did she saw something wrong? She was worried that she upset him. She didn't want lost and opportunity of making a friend because who knows when should be able to make another friend. "I wouldn't dream going off with anyone on here. If you say I can't trust the men on here how can I trust you?" She asked softly.

Her eyes wondered across the quaint little bedroom. She deducted this is where he stayed and this probably where she was going to stay to until she makes them 'rich'. She saw him disappear some where. She waited trying to get the feel of the boat as it rocked back and forth. You would think after living under the ocean that should would be fine with the crashing of the waves against the boat and its rocking but she wasn't. She smiled softly when he reappeared taking the pants and putting them on feeling that she just taken the nicest thing he had. "Do you have a shirt I can where?" She asked. "Do you think I will be able to get some more I don't girl clothes when we get to land I don't mean to be rude but I already feel like I'm taking some expensive clothing and I don't want to a burden to anyone." Truth is she wanted more bright colors and some flip flops. She always wondered what flip flops felt like or the sand in between her toes. There was so much she wanted to know and she had a month to figure things out. And falling in love wasn't as high as she hoped.

"Anyways life is full of risks if you don't take them you will never know. If the people who wanted leave don't leave and waste their lives away then what good will do that to them. Most of these men are so young they have so much head of them and they should take full advantage of that." She said. She paused some. "I'm sorry if I upset you earlier I don't about asking you why people don't leave here." She whispered feeling bad. Changing the subject. "Hey I have question have you ever had nachos? What do they taste like? I heard some stories that the older mermaids told how they were really cheesy and delicious." She smiled as her mouth water as she recalled the stories of the cheesy treat.

She was full of questions. "Is alright if I asked you more questions about the main land I heard so many things and I want to know more too. Is true that people can actual fly in things. I forget what they are called." she said taking a minute to remember the word. "Airplanes that's it. Is there any other ways to fly." She sat softly on the bed. "Why do I feel sick every time the boat rocks back and forth she asked. She bit her lip some. "I never felt this way before? I'm going to die? I'm too young to die." She didn't really know what was happening. She didn't remember any stories about getting sick in boats. She hope she didn't catch a deathly illness from the dead fish or even the sailors.
