Leah | 30 comments I even told my mom about this challenge. I'm not sure if she's a Goodreads member, but I think she'll participate in some way.

As for myself, I've already put the list on my fridge and picked out some books. This is going to be awesome! If I can just hold out a few more weeks lol.

message 3: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Blaylock (samanthakwasney) yes, I printed out some copies, I am going to have my kids do it also this year, just minus a couple... now I don't want to finish the few I am reading cause I know what they will go towards!! ahh

message 4: by Leanne (new)

Leanne (lvinny123) | 10 comments So,who is starting at the top of the checklist and working your way down? Or anyone going to and fro on the list? What book does everyone think they will start with...

Ann Leanne wrote: "So,who is starting at the top of the checklist and working your way down? Or anyone going to and fro on the list? What book does everyone think they will start with..."

First off, welcome! I think I'm going to pick and choose which category I want to read depending on my mood instead of going straight down the list. How about you? I am not sure which on I'm going to start with yet.

message 6: by Leah (last edited Dec 19, 2014 01:39PM) (new)

Leah | 30 comments I think I'll skip around. I think certain ones will be harder to find than others, so skipping around will allow me to check more off. As for what I'll start with, I'm not totally sure. It'll depend on my mood when the year starts lol.

message 7: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Olsen (cindy406) | 1 comments Thanks for inviting me Ann this will be fun I'm sure I will skip around a great deal I will have to find the fit for the books I pick out and every now and then I want an angsty teen age vampire romance...

Welcome to the group! How old are you kids that are doing it? I hope you keep us updated on their progress as well. I'm rushing to finish the one I'm reading now so I can start fresh in 2015.

Tell your mom to get on Goodreads and join us! I love your mom! :) I'm having trouble with the having to wait, too. Are you going to try to do all 50?

message 10: by Ann (new)

Ann I had a question for everyone, too. Let's say you choose War and Peace as one of your books. This satisfies at least 3 different things on the challenge checklist. Are you guys going to count one book for more than one thing or are you choosing one book per checklist item?

Because I want to read 50 books this year I am going to choose one book per item on the checklist. So for War and Peace I'd most likely use that as my "published over 100 years ago" book but then if I found another I wanted to read that only satisfied that same requirement I might move it to the "over 500 pages" place. Does that make sense? I'm also not going to read War and Peace. At least not in 2015. That'll take up WAY too much of my time. :-)

message 11: by Mary Ann (new)

Mary Ann (marranni) I know I'll read more books by skipping around rather than trying to go in order.

message 12: by Leah (new)

Leah | 30 comments I was going with one book per checklist item. Otherwise, how could you satisfy the 50 books for the year challenge?

I get what you mean about shifting finished books around to meet certain requirements. I guess there's no harm in that, if no one else minds.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all.

I'm planning one book per requirement, but I reserve the right to move a book around in the event that it satisfies several prompts. I think that's reasonable. I will definitely NOT go in order. In fact, I'm thinking about getting a big jump in January by doing things like the short stories, graphic novel, and other shorter books. Frontloading the challenge will just help me finish.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Arguments against going straight down the list: First book at 500+ pages might take some readers longer than a week and make them feel "behind" in the challenge - nobody likes that. The 4th prompt is "a book written this year. If you read fast (or even if you just average a book a week) that only leaves you with a few weeks of published titles for 2015. If you're looking to use libraries to fulfill your reading list then you would likely find that nothing published in 2015 has been purchased and processed yet. The prompt for "a book set during Christmas" is far down the list, but not so far that it is likely to coincide with Christmas -time in 2015 - or perhaps you prefer a Christmas in July?

Just a few thoughts / arguments against going straight down the list. I honestly don't feel strongly about it and you can, of course, do whatever you like. Cheers!

Oh yeah I'm aiming for all 50! And then some lol.

message 16: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Blaylock (samanthakwasney) my kids are 13 and 11. I will also be skipping around.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Definitely skipping around. The book I have in mind for "published this year" won't be out until May. So I'm just going to start with things I already have on my shelf or library, then tackle the rest.

message 18: by Ian (new)

Ian (ibc4) I think it would be easy to count multiple items off under one book. But I ask you, where's the challenge in that?

I love the purpose behind this particular challenge - don't just read what you've got on your shelves right now.

Go out and look for titles you wouldn't normally try.

Read widely :D

message 19: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Hicks | 4 comments I'm a bit new to topics and groups on goodreads, are we having a different discussion board for each dot point or is that too much admin-ing? everything is now written down in my notebook!

Zoe wrote: "I'm a bit new to topics and groups on goodreads, are we having a different discussion board for each dot point or is that too much admin-ing? everything is now written down in my notebook!"

This sounds reasonable to me. Especially if we plan to share what we are reading.

message 21: by Amii (new)

Amii | 37 comments Definitely skipping around. There are some books are my night stand that are on my list. I want to get those out of the way first.

Ann Zoe wrote: "I'm a bit new to topics and groups on goodreads, are we having a different discussion board for each dot point or is that too much admin-ing? everything is now written down in my notebook!"

I could definitely start a thread for each prompt if thats what people want!

message 23: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 10 comments Thanks for starting those threads! I think that's a great way to discuss each reading prompt.

message 24: by Beth (new)

Beth Honestly, I think one of the hardest things will be deciding which prompt to choose for certain books. For instance, I am currently reading a book with more than 500 pages (1), by a female author (9), set in another country (13), set somewhere I've always wanted to visit (29), with magic (39), with a TV show based on it (49).

message 25: by Ann (new)

Ann Brooke wrote: "Thanks for starting those threads! I think that's a great way to discuss each reading prompt."

You're welcome. I think you're right, too.

message 26: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 7 comments I think that the easiest way to handle that issue is to wait until you have a category you haven't been able to fill in and use a multiuse book.

message 27: by Burcu (new)

Burcu | 5 comments I'll definitely skip around. I chose Emma to start with but I realized it fits more than one category (actually it fits 9!). If I check all the points the books fit as I go along then it would mean less than 50 books and it feels like it's against the spirit of the challenge. But I'm not sure to check which prompt. What if I choose "A book with a one word title" instead of "A classic romance" then I want to read a one word title one which doesn't fit any other prompt? Bah!

message 28: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lynnali) I think it's acceptable to move books around in categories after you've read them if you read is something else that fits better. In the end, you read both books, so it doesn't matter which category is ticked off with which book.

message 29: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidi28) I had a question for everyone, too. Let's say you choose War and Peace as one of your books. This satisfies at least 3 different things on the challenge checklist. Are you guys going to count one book for more than one thing or are you choosing one book per checklist item?

I'm actually going to count books for multiple challenges. I want to read 52 books this year, but I don't want to feel too restricted by these challenges. That way I won't be annoyed at myself for reading a book that doesn't fit a challenge/fits a challenge I've already done. I think I'll enjoy it more that way, and this should be fun!

message 30: by Daneil (new)

Daneil Newcomb | 33 comments I am with Heidi! I plan to read 52 books this year, and I plan to complete every single prompt, but I also know there are books I want to read which classify as multiple categories and I'll tag them as such. I have a feeling I'll end up with two books for quite a few of the prompts due to overlap.

I'll probably skip around based on what's available. I get most of my reading material from the library, so whatever I have is whatever I'll read!

message 31: by Cate (last edited Jan 02, 2015 12:53PM) (new)

Cate (catelam) | 56 comments I think I will count a single book towards multiple prompts too, as I would love to finish the challenge but also read books outside of it.
I will probably proceed a bit differently and instead of choosing books based on the prompts I will just read what I would normally read (apart from things I probably wouldn't pick up otherwise e.g. author with my initials) and then every time I finish a book put it under all the prompts it could fit - at the end of the year I will rearrange to have minimum overlaps and repetitions.

message 32: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Hiya just joined I knew about the challenge but must have forever and a bookstore I know posted it on FB. Did not know about the grp on here so decided to join. I'm planning on jumping around have other challenges I'm doing also. But this one will get me to read other types I usually don't. Like you ann that sound good about moving books around.

I'm trying to keep it to one check per box, as well. Which is troubling as I finished My True Love Gave to Me and it will surely be the only Christmas-set book I read this year, but I marked it as short story collection.

I think that's the great thing about this challenge though. You can shift around what you use it for and find another. If you have difficulty finding another Christmas-set story than mark it as so and find a new short story collection. That's what I plan on doing if I get stuck somewhere.

It is definitely more likely that I find another collection of short stories.

message 36: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I probably will count that as short story I read probably most of it this year. I was undecided about counting anything I started before but why not. I had so many started when I started this year alot I'm still reading.

message 37: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Cunningham | 4 comments Loving the challenge, even though I've just started on my second book, I live for reading and mostly like all sorts but my favourite genre is probably crime/thriller. I started off with the book with over 500 pages, I chose Lesley Pearse's Charlie..really enjoyed it as I do all her books. Now am just started The Magpies by Mark Edwards.....the author I have never read before...am really looking forward to completing the challenge..xx

message 41: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella I am a little OCD and I wanted a list that I could print and in which I could fill in the names of the books I am reading for each category as well as the start date and end date for each one, so I created one and posted it on my blog. It's free to print for anyone who is interested, here is the link:

Feel free to share!

message 42: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Johnson (michellecurates) | 85 comments I'm going down the list. And while a book I read could fit into another slot, I'm purposely only using one book per slot. AND to make it more interesting for me, I'm not picking till I get to the prompt. So if I have a book on hand that fits it, I'll read it....otherwise, I'll go searching for something.

This is SO fun. And for me, a way to try out some new books.

That's a fun and interesting way to tackle this challenge! That's one of my favorite things about this challenge that everyone can tweak it in their own ways and still participate in our group. Thank you for being an active member of our group!!

Chris Hoag | 28 comments Today I sat down with the list of books I've read so far and fit them into their categories. Now I am beginning to look for titles to help fulfill other prompts. Some will be harder than others for me to achieve.

message 45: by Priya (new)

Priya Bhowal (priyalovingly) | 26 comments I have started from January itself and i have read 15 books. these 15 books cover more than 15 prompts. I hope that's ok

message 46: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I'm glad that I'm using goodreads reading challenge 2015 and Pinterest because it has all of the books I've from January 1st to now on,so all I had to do was put up my challenge list then go to my Pinterest board for my Goodreads 2015 Reading Challenge and then just match which book went to which challenge.

message 47: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Question are we doing this in 2016 with the same questions or different one.

message 48: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (kiik) | 158 comments Ha, I can't even think about next year yet. However, I would hope that if popsugar made another challenge for next year they would come up with new prompts.

I'm actually kinda of having fun doing this, it's helping me with my kindle TBR but also finding new things to read ( which means added to my already big TBR).

Oh, I definitely didn't mean to imply that I'm not enjoying it. But new prompts next year would be nice, as well. One of the best things about this challenge is that it pushes your boundaries, so what better way to do that next year than with even more unique promts?
