SOLVED: This is a W.E.B Griffin book/seriers. Brotherhood of War and the main Character is Craig Lowell.
In these stories 2 guys one the wealthy dashing hero type and the other the smart not best looking guy meet up in the army in post ww2 Germany. They become friends. Somethings tells me he/they are in an american armor division and they then end up in the Korean Conflict as advisers with the Sherman tanks before america officially declares war.
Another specific thing about this series is Dirk Pitt stories involve cars...in this series the rich guy is all about airplanes and although he is in the army he is always jumping into one of his private airplanes to run of and tackle a problem that has come up.
Eventually the story and series progresses and the characters moves back stateside both eventually become big wheels in the army and DC politics. I may be wrong but the wealthy guys father was senator or something and as a result gets invited to DC insider events. I think the "smart" sidekick guy becomes a bigshot in the intelligence community.
I read this book and series in 2010. When I read it there we a couple books in the series in print already. The details are fuzzy as I was just reminded of the books. tried googleing to check up on the series but no luck.
