Excellent! I can't wait! I so enjoyed the 2015 challenge.

Leslie (watchoutforlucy) Hello. I'm down to my last book of the challenge. For some reason, my books are not showing up on The Challenge's bookshelf. I copy them from the list and add the # bookshelf when I finish each book. Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong? I really want to see my completed list. Thanks!

message 204: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Leslie, I'm not sure what you mean. You can't have your own bookshelf here, but you can add books to the group shelves, as long as someone else hasn't added them already.

If you want to see your completed list, you can copy & paste it in this thread:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

A few hundred of us did so. :-)

Mindy

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Betsy, it looks like at least part of it is set in Viet Nam so I don't see why not. Plus the challenge is self-regulated so no one will tell you you can't use it! Also, there are threads for each task, you might get more discussion here:

Leslie, you can either track your completed books in the Plan thread as Mindy has noted or you can create a shelf in your own profile. I have lots of shelves in my profile for various challenges.

message 207: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (watchoutforlucy) Thank you. I'm a bit slow sometimes. Thought just creating bookshelf in my books would automatically put me on the challenge's bookshelf too. Last night I figured out that I had to add the book if it wasn't already there. Having trouble with some editions - they come up in main db for Goodreads, but won't show up in search on challenge's "add book". For example, the edition of Red Badge of Courage came up and is in my "read" books, but I can't find it when I try to add it to the challenge. I'm picky and want to have exact edition, especially when I have an audio vs print. Thanks, again!

message 208: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (watchoutforlucy) Hi Bea, created shelf in my own profile, but doesn't show up in Challenge. Thought it would show up in both. Well. I just want that Email at the end of the year stating I've completed the challenge. Silly? Happy reading!

message 209: by Bea (last edited Nov 25, 2015 02:31AM) (new)

Bea Leslie, if you are having trouble finding the book to add, try searching for the ISBN.

And, yes, you have to add the book specifically to the bookshelf for it to be there. Sorry, I think I misunderstood what you were trying to do.

message 210: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (watchoutforlucy) Thank you so much for helping. I was up really late the other day trying to figure it out! I've been finished and like to check things off my list. Do you enjoy the challenge? I was surprised that I enjoyed a graphic novel. Other than that, my two least favorite genres, Romance and Sci-Fi still have not won me over. Although, some people call Jane Austin Romance. How about you. Will you change your reading habits, Bea?

Oh, I've got a copy of the list, I carry it with me at all times! Thank you, Mindy.

Bea Leslie, I found that I was really excited to begin the challenge and thought two books a month was a do-able goal.

Then midway through the year, I got off track and suddenly it was a chore to try to catch up. Partly this is due to my own health, that of my spouse, and the fact that I am in several groups on GR - all of which have challenges in which I participate.

Now, however, I find that I only have three books left to complete - one I own and one I have already checked out of the library. So now it looks like I might finish after all!

No, I am unlikely to change the genres of books I read. I prefer Mystery/Suspense/Thriller and will always default to those genres by choice. However, I have found some new authors that I will continue to read. I suppose that is a good thing.

message 213: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (watchoutforlucy) I hope you do complete the challenge, along with all the others you've started.
Sorry to hear about the health issues in your family. I can relate-have been full time caregiver for my mom since June. Then, I ended up with my leg in a cast - just as it the weather has gotten cold and sloppy. It can really slow you down in your reading and just about everything else. When we need to escape most, it becomes hard to find time and the ability to concentrate.
I'm interested to know who you like in mystery & suspense. I'll check out your bookshelves. I love to watch Masterpiece Mystery, and have been listening to Jack Reacher books on tape for about a year (love the reader). Always looking for recommendations.
Please keep reading - all the best to you and Happy Thanksgiving.

message 214: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (watchoutforlucy) Okay. Thanks to those who helped me figure out how to add a book to the group bookshelf. I have tried to add all 24 books, and only 19 show up. I have tried to add Red Badge of Courage 4 times - even using a different edition. It just won't take. "under 25". The editions all showed up in Goodreads & are on my own shelves. But these five do not show up in the "add to shelve" search of the challenge. I like things neat and tidy. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

message 215: by Bea (last edited Nov 28, 2015 04:21AM) (new)

Bea Leslie, I suspect that the edition of Red Badge of Courage that you are trying to add is The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane . When it is found through the search for the BR bookshelf, it comes up grayed out. You need to click on the EDIT button, which will bring up a Group Book box. It will show the shelves for which this book is already added. To add it to a different shelf, click "choose shelf", select the shelf, close the window, then select save. That particular book will then be added to your selected shelf.

message 216: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (watchoutforlucy) Bea, thank you. I'm going to blame being tired on my inability to navigate this site. Hope this will do it. Then, I will give you some peace! Here I go! And, anything you need, I'm here for you !

message 217: by Jen (new)

Jen (jen_alluisi) I didn't see anything about it in this thread, and if I missed it in another thread, I am sorry. Simple question though: Is there a minimum page requirement for a book to "count"? My only 2 holes on the list are book in translation and book published before 1850. Candide by Voltaire would fit both (and I have somehow never read it), but it's juuuuuuust under 100 pages.

message 218: by Mj (new)

Mj | 32 comments Jen,

The Challenge is really for your benefit - no one else. Never did see any minimum page quota per book. I think Candide would be fine but the choices are up to you. That's what's nice about this challenge - the flexibility. Good luck completing the challenge!!

We don't require any page count! You do what fits the task in whatever way YOU want to.

Brandy (handmaderedhead) | 11 comments are we going to get the post with the complete list in one place for 2016 and the plans post again for this year? it was nice to have an easy to read list for on the go phone use, and a place to plan and track our progress (and check out others lists).

message 221: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Brandy, a couple of us have asked for a reading plans thread but got no reply. I assume it will go up on the 1st but not sure why we're waiting.

Martha (marthag503) Mindy wrote: "Brandy, a couple of us have asked for a reading plans thread but got no reply. I assume it will go up on the 1st but not sure why we're waiting."

Last year the place to record our reading plans wasn't created until around January 10. I imagine there will be a place set aside to record what we've read, but probably not until next week.

message 223: by Bea (new)

Bea I've noticed that several comments in the Task threads do not have links to the books, but rather just lists the books as text. Links allow others (like me) to check the book out for our own TBR much easier. To put in a link: click on the "add book/author" at the top right of the comment box. You can then search for the book by title or ISBN. Another tab in that same section allows for finding the author. Just a heads up, the author search is FN LN.

message 224: by Brandy (new)

Brandy (handmaderedhead) | 11 comments Bea, I use my phone more than a computer and my Good Reads app doesn't have the ability to make links in the comments unless I cut and pay from a web page. I am sure that it's the case for most posts without links.

Ah...That may be so, Brandy. Too bad. They really should upgrade that app for that purpose. Oh, well.

Brandy (handmaderedhead) | 11 comments Bea, I 100% agree. I'd like to be able to quote people too while on the phone.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I hope that somebody can answer this since I am new to this area.

I have left some questions here and either I'm told that the folder is closed (found out only when I clicked send or they never appeared. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong except I think the closed folder should be noted under the topic heading.

'M going to try one more time or assume you don't want me or new members.

Since I just joined am I allowed to use boost read in the beginning of 2017? How do I copy from one post and paste this into a new post.

Hope to hear from a moderator or member of this group. I'm very eager to take part in this challenge.

message 228: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 416 comments Nancy from NJ, what is boost read? You can join anytime you want. Last year, I heard of the challenge and joined in late January. Others joined throughout the year. Some people count books started and completed after January 1st. For me, any book finished on or after January 1st counts. Hope that answers your questions.

message 229: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 416 comments The phone app still doesn't allow links, quotes, or post editing.

I did see your post in the Discussion thread and was about to respond when I saw this one. I'm not a moderator, just a member, started this year.

If there's a little lock next to the topic, it's a closed folder and you can't post, there's not even a comment box available. It says "This topic has been frozen by the moderator. No new comments can be posted." Otherwise, you should be able to post under any topic.

You can definitely use any books you've already read in 2017 for any prompt, it doesn't start when you join the group/start the challenge officially. If you've already knocked some off inadvertently, great!

On a web browser, for copying, you hold down Shift key and highlight the text of what you want to copy, then right-click COPY, go down to the comment box and right-click PASTE. You can click 'reply' to respond to someone else's post. You can add a link or book cover by clicking 'add book/author' above the comment box.

She meant 'books read.' Typo.

message 232: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thank you for your answers and sorry for the typos. I have been online with AOL save their beginnings and have had to learn so many different ways of doing things. Through AOL , chat rooms, Yahoo and now Goodreads, that it takes me awhile to catch on to a new area. I use an I Phone, IPAD, Kindle and regular Pc to ask and enter information. Some of what I want to do I'm learning can only be done on my PC like editing when you want to add some additional information.

Again many thanks for helping me out.

message 233: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Elyse - thanks for all of your help and directions. You certainly made navigating this area much easier.

Chrissy This may not be the best place to ask, but will there be an "I finished" thread for 2017, like I saw in the 2016 folder?
