I think if a moderator is a member of the Goodreads Feedback group, he/she could create that type of challenge specifically for this group.

Hey KIm, another great sci fi book is Hugh Howey's silo series. The first (and the best in my opinion) is Wool. What a sweet sweet ride it is.

Sarah | 4 comments I'm a little confused about what defines an indigenous culture for this challenge. Is there a list I can use as a guide? Are there religious groups that would fall into this category?

message 105: by Mj (new)

Mj | 32 comments Called Tribal Peoples, First Peoples, Native Peoples, Indigenous Peoples. Usually the first people who live in a country/place before new people or other people immigrants come.

They may share a particular religion but that is not the reason they're defined as indigenous - living there first is.

Here's a link.

C (ciellelouise) | 1 comments I'm teaching a critical reading class for high school students at our local homeschool co-op. They're excited about using the #ReadHarder challenge to design their own lists! In class, we'll discuss ways to help them assess their choices, maybe starting with some ideas gleaned from How To Read A Book. Any suggestions for supporting materials?

Julianne MacLean is amazing too. I despise formulaic romance novels, but hers are not like that.

Steve,

Good for you!! You might also want to share your thoughts on each of these books you've read on the Specific Task #'s Discussion. I'm sure people would be interested in hearing your views on Redeployment as an example and get some ideas of books to read.

Sarah there on some good book for Indigenous books in the Task #9 Discussion Group elsewhere on Book Riot's Discussion Group site.

If I'm correct, you go to the Read Harder group here on Goodreads. You will see bookshelves listed under Group Home on the right hand side of the page.

message 117: by Mj (new)

Mj | 32 comments Further to some questions about communal shelves, the following might be helpful.

Adding a Book to the Group Shelf

1. Be sure you’ve entered The Book Riot’s Read Harder Book Challenge site. You do this by clicking on Your Groups and then clicking on The Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge. You cannot enter the communal bookshelves from your own personal account. You need to be INSIDE The Book Riot’s Read Harder Book Challenge Site.

2. Once inside, on the upper right at the top, you will see a number of options including Group Home, underneath Bookshelf Shelves and underneath Discussions.

Click on Bookshelf

3. To the left at the top of a new screen, you will see where it says ADD BOOKS.

Type in the name of the book you want to add and click search.

4. You will see the results of your search. If you don’t see the book you want, search again. When you see the book you want to add, choose the book you want and Click Add to Group. This Add to Group is to the right of the book title.

5. A new screen will appear and this is where

A) you choose what you add to your bookshelves.

B) Choose Read if you’re done or choose Currently Reading if that’s your status.

C) Choose Your Numbered Bookshelf Task # e.g. Task #2 > 65 years of age if that is the task you’re working on. You only need to scroll down to find the Task # you want.

D) And purely Optional – but you can also write comments on why you read or are reading or read this book.

E) You can also choose the start read date and finish read date here

6. Most important be sure to SAVE your group book before closing or you will lose what you’ve done and the information will NOT be added to the group shelf and you will have to start over.

You do this by clicking on Save Group Book on bottom left of screen.

Fyi, if you make a mistake, later you can always go the communal book shelf, find the book and click edit and then click on Remove from Group to remove from the communal shelf.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask again if you need more direction or clarification.

message 122: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (rachelmanwill) There's been a question here about how we should be using the bookshelves in this group. So that it doesn't get confusing, you should restrict books on those shelves to books that are currently being read or have already been read for that task, not books that are being planned for those tasks.

Erika | 131 comments Anyone else combining this challenge with the PopSugar challenge? I'm already doing that one, and since some of the topics overlap I was planning on counting some books for both challenges, is that okay?

ETA: Especially when it looks like I can already check one off, since I've already read a romance novel this year.

I actually wasn't familiar with the PopSugar challenge, but I just looked it up and, 1. it definitely looks interesting, and 2. I don't see any reason you couldn't combine the two! You could create one shelf for the Read Harder challenge and one for the popsugar challenge, and you'd be able to add the books you read to whatever shelves apply.

message 127: by Judith (new)

Judith (jaensea) | 65 comments Do all the books I choose have to be ones I've never read before? I was thinking of re-reading a book I read over 40 years ago. Is that allowable?

Ana-Maria (leo_amabi) Judith wrote: "Do all the books I choose have to be ones I've never read before? I was thinking of re-reading a book I read over 40 years ago. Is that allowable?"

Hi, Judith, I don't see why that would be a problem at all! I've been considering re-reading a childhood favorite for my guilty pleasure task if that helps. But the Book Riot staff did say to make this challenge your own!

message 129: by Judith (new)

Judith (jaensea) | 65 comments Thanks Ana-Maria. Just wanted to get another opinion on this matter. I've been thinking about re-reading some Richard Brautigan for poetry or short stories. I came across all of his books in my basement and thought, why not? See if I still like them. Of course I could just read them even if they don't fit the challenge.

That sounds like a great idea! And I know that I'll be reading plenty of books (mostly fantasy) that don't have a place in this challenge.

The last thing I want is to think, I've got this challenge and I'm stuck reading things that just fit the categories and not other books I like. That would ruin the fun.

Diana Long | 2 comments Are we to post the books on here as we check them off the challenge?

message 133: by Ana-Maria (new)

Ana-Maria (leo_amabi) Diana wrote: "Are we to post the books on here as we check them off the challenge?"

Hi, Diana. You may have found this already, but there is a discussion entitled "Read Harder Challenge Plans" wherein you can plan out your challenge. You'll see that some of us are posting the books we plan to read, some of us are just posting the books we have read, and some of us are doing both. You can also add the books you are currently reading or have already read for this challenge to the group Bookshelf. Mj wrote up some great instructions on doing that above in Message 121. There are also discussions started on the first, second, and third tasks completed.

Hope this helps!

message 134: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Groves | 67 comments I wouldn't think there are hard and fast "rules" about how you approach this. If you want to share your plans and your achievements as you go, there are several ways to do that. Others may be tackling this challenge privately or may not post until they've reached some milepost or the end of the year. Do whatever feels comfortable for you.

message 139: by Jennifer (new)

Karen Leanne wrote: "I thought I'd seen a "bingo card" template for this challenge - can anyone point me in its direction please?"

There is one at post #64 on page 2 of the topic called "Read Harder Challenge Plans." I know because it is how I find my own plan!

message 141: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 13 comments I am making good progress with this challenge while also doing the Pop Sugar challenge which is a little longer. All books appear only once on each challenge but most are integrated into both challenges. My most challenging reads on The Read Harder Challenge will probably be the Sci-Fi and the micro history while I am reading multiple books that fit in some categories.

message 143: by Alli (new)

Alli (allim89) Is it just me or are some of the task threads being duplicated?

message 144: by Robin P (new)

Robin P I've asked a moderator to fix that, otherwise we'll have 100 threads by the end of the year!

message 145: by Bea (new)

Bea Yeah, it's getting annoying.

message 146: by Bea (new)

Bea This group has a LOT of duplicate threads. I am wondering if it is because people are having a hard time finding the Book Riot created threads.

When you go to the discussions list, if the thread you are looking for is not visible, click on the title of the folder. It will open and show all the created threads.

Bea - I've tried that but it only opens the first 14. No matter where I try to search, I still cannot access all of the lists, even when I click on 'all' I do not get all of them.

Hi, Judith! The duplicate threads are definitely out of hand! On my screen, you can view all of the task discussions if you click on DISCUSSIONS in the top right of the group page, then click on TASK IDEAS/RESOURCES/DISCUSSIONS. This page only shows up to 40 topics on my screen, so with all the duplicate threads you have to click on NEXT at the bottom of the screen to see the rest of the discussions. Hope this helps!

Thank you for writing this, I'm sure the confusion on how to see threads is leading to the duplicates. Does anyone know how to get the attention of the moderators to clean up the duplicate threads? I sent a message to Rachel who is listed as moderator some time ago but got no response. The other moderator is Book Riot itself and I don't see an easy way to contact a person. The challenge itself is excellent but the site is getting to be a disaster with all the multiple threads. It is confusing when not all the topics show up automatically, I only knew about this from other GR groups.

message 150: by Bea (new)

Bea Robin wrote: "...Does anyone know how to get the attention of the moderators to clean up the duplicate threads?..."

Robin, I have started putting a note on each duplicate thread with a link to the actual Book Riot thread. I don't know if that will help or not.
