Val H. | 22142 comments Today's results:

North Melbourne Kangaroos (Steve) v St Kilda Saints (Lez)
1.1.7 (Q1) 3.3.21
2.2.14 (Q2) 6.7.43
6.7.43 (Q3) 6.11.47
8.8.56 (Q4) 7.12.54

Hawthorn Hawks (unwanted) v Brisbane Lions (David)
3.1.19 (Q1) 3.3.21
6.2.38 (Q2) 4.5.29
10.2.62 (Q3) 7.7.49
14.6.90 (Q4) 9.8.62

West Coast Eagles (Sussex) v Melbourne Demons (TheFoe)
5.1.31 (Q1) 0.4.4
7.3.45 (Q2) 3.6.24
11.6.72 (Q3) 5.9.39
12.6.78 (Q4) 7.9.51

The announcement that the season would end today came at half-time in the Hawks/Lions game and before the Eagles/Demons game so not sure if it would have affected players. It's all immaterial now.

Val H. | 22142 comments Hopefully this won't be the one and only round for 2020.

Our tipsters' ladder is as follows:

Round 1 (first number is correct number of wins - you want this to be high; number in brackets is the cumulative margin which is used to separate punters on the same amount of points - you want this to be low)

Anita on 8 (5)
Foe on 8 (15)
Blastro on 7 (3)
Duke on 7 (6)
Sj Brooke (Steve) on 7 (8)
Dean on 7 (9)
Philip on 7 (12)
Tech on 6 (1)
David on 6 (2)
RedJohn on 6 (3)
SussexWelsh on 6 (4)
Val on 6 (7)
Lez on 5 (19)
Grizzly on 4 (12)
Suzy on 3 (31)

Charity donations are:

Philip - (Canteen) & Duke (Centre For Eye Research Australia) - $6.00 (Highest score - both the Tigers and the Giants scored 105)
Tech (Oscar's law) - A$6.00 (closest margin)
Anita (The Mirabel Foundation) - A$11.00 (weekly winner)

Well done to you all. Tipping was pretty good considering so many unknowns both on and off the field. Fingers crossed that we get to resume sometime this year. The AFL have said they're happy to schedule games into December!

Excuse my ignorance, but who or what the heck is Zoom?

message 65: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It's the thing that everyone is using to get to all talk together while chatting online with family and friends or using to hold Business Meetings ... and to make those TV Ads where there are lots of people all talking together on one Screen.

I don't Skype or Facetime, never mind Zoom, so you can carry on with flashing away on Standby to your Heart's content, Grizzly - LOL!!! ;o>

I think I remember Val saying one of her Daughters had showed her how to Zoom though?!!

message 71: by theDuke (last edited May 13, 2020 12:31AM) (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments Ah goody.....fingers on the trigger Val....or as the trigger happy American cousins might say....."LOCK 'N' LOADED MA'AM!! YEEHAAAAA!" :-)

Speaking of this Zoom tech and perhaps of Microsoft's Teams software..yes it's very impressive technology...and certainly has helped presenters keep going their respective TV programmes on the gogglebox through using it. Last Friday, I watched The Last Leg In Lockdown, of which the three presenters managed to do a 1 hour live programme in unison, by broadcasting from London, Australia & some place in the north of England that Alex Brooker lives in (!)...and it all went swimmingly well....not a single technical glitch occured.

That said...i can't see myself ever using it. I've never even 'Skyped' with anybody before, and i wouldn't know how to. And i've no idea what Face Time is (a spin off service from Face Book mibbe?) One of the least used features on my aging Acer lappy is the inbuilt camera...which has never been turned on! In fact, it has had a piece of black electrical insulating tape over the lens for the past 4 years, ever since i learnt that hackers could access person's computer remotely and turn the darn thing on without the owner's knowledge and see what the user is doing! Feck that!

I'm still looking for a new laptop..and to be honest, I'm struggling to suss out what the differences are between them all..since they all look exactly the same to me. The sepcifications mean zip to me.....so 3 minutes online looking at the various models available..pretty much sends me in near coma! I never trust other reviewers opinions..cos everybody has different views on what constitutes a good or bad model, so it's irrelevelant what reviewers opinions are on any of them. With me....i probably use only about 5% of the features in a typical laptop..as i don't play games, don't use the creative programmes, don't use words, excel powerpoint (what is that?), One Note (again..what is that?!)...the camera...website designing software, calculator (cos i got a handheld one innit!)..and whatever other crap microsoft and Acer had shoved in it's memory banks. Just the internet mainly, to shop, sell and listen to music, 'pop' on here and occasionally a vaping forum, some online streaming sites, plus the use of the PC's hardrive to store images, personal document files and music.

Some folks might suggest i should just invest in a tablet instead perhaps, except i can't stand touch screen technology. My fingers are far too hamfistedly thumpy to work them properly, so i don't own a smart phone, nor a smart TV.....or anything smart really! I don't even process any peripheral kitchen gadgets either, bar the humble toaster and kettle. On my laptop..the mouse pad sits inactive, as i prefer to use proper old fashion plug in mechanical mouse (yep..the ones with a rubber ball in them...gee......that's so 1990s!) as imo, these are far far more useable than the irksome touchy feelly pads rollocks! Shessh....I'm so old fashioned..and i'm not even 46 yet!

Technology is moving on way too fast for me to keep up with these days...never had any televisonal streaming services...not even Sky. Haven't had that since they were broadcasting in anologue. My newish television, which i bought last November, is a bog standard 'dumb' model by Panasonic. A 39" screen, full 1080 HD, cheap and cheerful thicko model, costing me just £280.......and it suits me just fine! Connected to that are a couple of DVD players..no BlueRay nonsense here...cos i could never tell the difference in picture quality between them anyway!

My Hi-Fi sound system, is a 20 year old Technics seperates set up....that has both CD & cassette tape players included! And yep......i do still play cassette tapes! And me vinyl frisbee spinner is from the early 1980's..still going strong.

I guess the only 'modern' tech i've adopted and learnt to use and set up in the recent years..is my collection of regulated vaping mods and the associated vaping parapheneralia....not that any of that requires a electronics degree to use. And i love it for the fact it's saving me life from the 'orrible lung polluting, nasty old tar loaded cigarettes..and me wallet is a whole lot happier these days too! :)

Yep.....i'm a self confessed and contented member of a little known group known as the 'Ol' Luddite, Definitely Growing Increasingly Technophobic Society!'...or O.L.D. G.I.T.S. for short! ;-)

Anyhoo..back to the resumation of the AFL games...let the battles commence....again!

PS: In hindsight..i think perhaps i shoulda posted this on Technologies thread now....duh!

Val H. | 22142 comments Duke - you might like to have another look at some of the advice P, Grizzly and myself gave you on:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

It might give you a starting point or at least some clarity on where you want to go next.

message 73: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments Heya Val,

Aye, thanks, i recall the suggestions putforward by you three back January or February then. P suggested Lenovos...and i think you mentioned Dells. I am finding myself drawn to Dells...so i'll check those out a bit more. :)

message 74: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22142 comments Round 2 will commence on June 11. Some state borders remain closed so this will affect the two Adelaide teams and the two based in Perth. So the idea is that the Crows and Port will stay in Adelaide and play each other and that the border may be open by the following week. However Freo and the Eagles will temporarily relocate to the Gold Coast and play as many rounds there (whether they be home or away games) as needed until the Western Australia border reopens and they don't have to undergo mandatory quarantine. The border between Victoria and new South Wales has never been closed so that's why the Roos and the Bombers are free to travel up to Sydney.

ROUND 2

Thursday June 11
Collingwood v Richmond (in Melbourne)

Friday June 12
Geelong Cats v Hawthorn (in Geelong)

Saturday June 13
Brisbane Lions v Fremantle (in Brisbane)
Carlton v Melbourne (in Melbourne)
Port Adelaide v Adelaide Crows (in Adelaide)
Gold Coast Suns v West Coast Eagles (on the Gold Coast)

Sunday June 14
GWS Giants v North Melbourne (in Sydney)
Sydney Swans v Essendon (in Sydney)
St Kilda vs Western Bulldogs (in Melbourne)

You can post your tips whenever you want to but I will remind everyone in the week leading up to the games.

message 93: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22142 comments Poor Steve!

Suzy, I did post birthday greeting to you on May 18 thinking that this would allow enough time even when deliveries seemed to have dwindled to snail's pace. However the tracking number supplied seems stuck at "Cleared and awaiting international departure; MELBOURNE VIC; Date & time Sun 24 May • 7:47am". So I fear it has gone to the bottomless pit of lost mail where it may meet up with a DVD and a book I bought from Music Magpie UK back in April. I've already received a refund for the former and will seek a refund for the latter. I will check with the Post Office on Monday but I fear they will not be able to help. Such is life!

message 94: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Ohhh Val ... x ... that was so kind of you ... x ;o>

It may still turn up yet? - we get Post most days here now but Second Class no longer seems to exist anymore and even local First Class takes about a week to 10 days to arrive with national First Class sometimes taking up to 3 to 4 weeks.

Just knowing that you thought of me on my Birthday means far more to me than whatever may or may not come - bless you and thank you! ... x x x ;o>
