That will work. I will start reading this book in the next couple of days
I’m gonna start a re-read in a few days as well. I did enjoy this, but I’m sure there are some things I missed.

Today Beverly Jenkins will be at the Porter Square bookstore in Cambridge MA and I’m going to see her and get her to autograph her new book.
We read a historical romance by her not too long ago in the group. I know this will cost some money too. She is one of my favorite authors.

Agreed, Dosha! I got to 10% and then decided to go back to the beginning. LOL! This time, however, I’m going to keep going.

Me too, Bernie. I just wish this pleasure wasn’t so costly.

Costly is right. If you read electronically and you need the ebook, let me know.

1. What do you think Adunni’s comparison of her mother to a rose flower (“a yellow and red and purple rose with shining leafs”) symbolizes? She also remembers her mother having a sweet smell like a rosebush. Why do you think she compares her mother to this particular type of flower? And how do you think our five senses play into our memories?
2. Adunni dreads her upcoming marriage to Morufu, but her friend Enitan is genuinely excited for Adunni, believing that her life will be improved after the wedding. Why do you think there is a disconnect between Adunni’s and Enitan’s points of view? Can you draw any comparisons between cultural attitudes toward marriage in America and Nigeria

As far as cultural attitudes about marriage, I think the words spoken by Adunni’s father during the wedding ceremony says it all!
I got to 12% and I’ve had enough of Morufu for today. I am getting so pissed off. LOL!

Wow, thank you so much, but I already purchased it.

So far I am really enjoying this book. I really appreciate the average american’s ability to get a basic education and choose their own spouse. Although women in America often complain about the way they are treated by their male counterparts, the disrespect is so much more prevalent in Africa

Me too, Bernie. It makes me so emotional, though. My heart is breaking for Adunni, who is just a little girl who wants to play.
Regarding arranged marriages, I’ve met a few couples from India who are in arranged marriages and plan to do the same for their children. The difference is that they adore their children and feel great responsibility and honor to choose for them. The young people tell me they are okay with this arrangement because they trust their parents. Not my way, but it seems to work for them. However, in this story, the father does not care for his daughter and views her as a burden to get rid of as soon as possible. SIGH!

So I guess not all arranged marriage’s are bad.

***SPOILER ALERT*** Her new husband is a nasty pig too. What the hell is with the two wives, why is the place of this rich man a dump? You can smell the bathroom and dust comes out of the mattress? Hello?
Seriously, I knew I was in Trouble when the prologue stated how rich the country is and how high the number of people that live below poverty. My heart has been breaking for this poor child since she found out she was getting married instead of getting an education. A woman is only good for making sons? If I could crawl into the pages of this book I’ll murder someone or two someone’s I would t hesitate.
This book is so good it’s disgusting.

Those words spoken at the wedding were so disturbing, I had to read them twice, to make sure I was reading right.
It’s a shame that so many crave education, when so many others take one for granted.
Morufu is definitely a horrible character. He and Labake deserve one another.

3. Compare and contrast Khadija with the glimpses we get of Adunni’s mother. How were their lives similar or different from one another?
4. Why do you think Bamidele doesn’t return for Khadija? What do you think he whispers in her ear before leaving her for the last time?
5. Why do you think Adunni is closer with Kayus than Born-boy? What is it that makes their sibling bond so deep?

Also Adunni became like a second mother to Kayus after their mother passed away.

Dosha, I feel you. When Morufu was setting up the “bed business” schedule , I was so disgusted. He is a nasty pig who thinks so much of his cab driving self! In addition, the pressure he puts on these women to produce boys or risk their families not being fed is despicable! So far, the men in this book are all pretty foul!

I’m so glad I’m in this group. I would not have known about this book. I wonder what time period this book takes place in. Is it the 21st century?

Chapter 19 has many clues.

#4. I think he realized that he could be killed for what he did and was interested in saving himself. He probably whispered I LOVE YOU.

Wow. Powerful.
Either way, what a jerk !

There was no guarantee that he would not be named in the future, and his actions showed that he did not want to take any chances.
Khadija showed up with Adunni, who now knows the truth too.

Makes sense.

The quest for an education is really something if you cannot have it. So many kids in USA hate school and don't want to go because they are forced to. Very interesting.

Well, he didn't really know how to get out of it so he took them to the water. If he was really trying to help her he would have brought the soap with him in the first place. Both wives were too trusting of this dude. Iya told her that he is not going to live up to his promise. She had to hide. But Dayum!!!! I just got to chapter 25. Wow!!!!

I'm up to chapter 25 now. This book is perfect for whispersync. The part where Adunni is singing in the car is so wonderful to hear on audio. I have read a good bit on my kindle, but I have been listening to it every chance I get.
