"Shadow and Bone" shows promise. Although I am having a hard time connecting to Alina Starkov, the main protagonist, the main character's conflicts have already been displayed, and I am interested in how these issues will cause problems and how they will be "resolved." Furthermore, visualizing the world in which the story takes place is a little hard as the descriptions are unfulfilling, and specific terms go unexplained. In the first couple of chapters, I have gotten a sense of the racial hierarchy present in the story. I left off in the book at a point where the main character's identity clashes with her interest, so I am curious as to how she deals with this. Lastly, there has not been much use of magic, as of now, so I am greedy for more whimsical displays of magic depicted, hopefully, in an elegant manner.
