ABANDONED. S/F Distopian(?) - Young couple running from Evil through Worlds/Dimensions

Science Fiction, young Asian guy starts off being trailed by an old fat man, then it becomes a bird of sorts. It drips black goo from it's mouth or beak. It is killing all human life in many worlds or dimensions. He ends up getting back together with an old girlfriend who life was in shambles in one of the "worlds" he tries to escape to, or he remembers this from his own memories. They escape to a world with an abandoned prison (Arizona I think), where the "bird" hunts them and this is where he discovers a clue
to which world is going to be (or can be) saved is stored in someone's memories. There were many beds, evidence they had (at some point) many people plugged into their World Traveling device. I think it was a nurse that has the memory of which world or how to save it. I think she kills herself.
The old man purpose is to only have one world left to where he is the "king" and controls everything, money, people.

I read it last year and got the impression it was a recent release after I looked up the author.
