♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments Wondering if I can use ~

The Murmur of Bees by Sofía Segovia for the gardening task.

The story centers around a boy who is taken in by a wealthy family. The patron' owns land that he then rents out to sharecroppers to grow sugarcane because there is too much for him to care for by himself. He is trying to keep the government from taking it, and he learns of a government loophole that prohibits them from taking land that is planted with orchards. The boy's bees lead him to an established (but forgotten) section of land with an old established grove of orange trees. He brings the blossoms back to his father, and the patron' realizes that he has found the thing that he needs to save his land. He buys a tractor so that he can speed up production, invests his wealth in orange trees, encourages his sharecroppers to participate in the plan - etc etc etc.

I have read this book, and there is much in it about caring for the land and the family and being good stewards. Yes, I will accept it.

Unfortunately, no. It might be a hawk or an eagle or another similar bird, but there are no clear distinguishing features for me to decide. Even enlarging the picture does not give me details on the shape of the bill or other characteristics that would help with identification.

Again, I have to say it does not. Most of the birds are too indefinite and the colorful one in front does not match the colors of the mandarin duck, although I think that is what the artist hoped to depict. These are all artistic drawings...not true representations of the birds.

You're fine, Rina. I just wish I could find a book to approve for you. I did take a look at the first 12 pages of your TBR but did not find anything other than you like much the same genres as I do. But, I wasn't shopping your list to add to mine, so I quit! LOL

Amanda, in view of this pandemic and the fact that libraries are closing and thus making it harder to obtain books, I will accept this bird as a bird of prey. I cannot identify it specifically, but identifiers are visible (wings, tail, bill).

I was going to say no (even though the neck and shape resembled a vulture) since my experience is that they are black. But, I did a search for images of vultures and, lo and behold, there was a picture that looked just like the cover. I will approve.

message 89: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 208 comments I think a good fit for the gardening task would be The Year of the Flood as it focuses on a sect called God's Gardeners. From the wikipedia: "They are vegetarians devoted to honoring and preserving all plant and animal life, and they predict a human species-ending disaster, which they call "The Waterless Flood"." There really is a lot of gardening in the plot because daily life in the sect revolves around taking care of the communal garden and the bees that they keep.

message 91: by Julia (new)

Julia (julia103) | 2714 comments Based on title and description (or if you have read it) would The Victory Garden be acceptable for Option 1?

"Garden" is in the title, and the description says "Emily volunteers as a “land girl,” tending to the neglected grounds of a large Devonshire estate. It’s here that Emily discovers the long-forgotten journals of a medicine woman who devoted her life to her herbal garden. The journals inspire Emily, and in the wake of devastating news, they are her saving grace."

I haven't read it yet, so I can't say how much of the plot actually involves the garden or her work as a land girl.
