The book's title translates to: The rider with a hawk.
Thanks!"
Yes, I will accept it as a hawk...possibly a sparrowhawk.
Wondering if I can use ~
for the gardening task. The story centers around a boy who is taken in by a wealthy family. The patron' owns land that he then rents out to sharecroppers to grow sugarcane because there is too much for him to care for by himself. He is trying to keep the government from taking it, and he learns of a government loophole that prohibits them from taking land that is planted with orchards. The boy's bees lead him to an established (but forgotten) section of land with an old established grove of orange trees. He brings the blossoms back to his father, and the patron' realizes that he has found the thing that he needs to save his land. He buys a tractor so that he can speed up production, invests his wealth in orange trees, encourages his sharecroppers to participate in the plan - etc etc etc.

I have read this book, and there is much in it about caring for the land and the family and being good stewards. Yes, I will accept it.
Rina wrote: "Would this work for the cover task?

Unfortunately, no. It might be a hawk or an eagle or another similar bird, but there are no clear distinguishing features for me to decide. Even enlarging the picture does not give me details on the shape of the bill or other characteristics that would help with identification.

Okay, thank you. And what about this one?
Would you be able to identify this bird-I tried...really I did...looks like a Tanger to my unskilled eye

Rina wrote: "Bea wrote: "Rina wrote: "Would this work for the cover task?

Again, I have to say it does not. Most of the birds are too indefinite and the colorful one in front does not match the colors of the mandarin duck, although I think that is what the artist hoped to depict. These are all artistic drawings...not true representations of the birds.

Yeah, sorry, I have no clue about birds. I guess I'll be here for more not approvals before I find something that works, LOL.

Rina, I really hate saying no to someone; so if you do find one that I can make a case for, I will. Or you could pick one of the ones in post #2 that I have approved.

Bea, I am sorry, if my post came across as complaining, I was actually laughing about me not knowing anything about birds :-)
Rina wrote: "Bea, I am sorry, if my post came across as complaining, I was actually laughing about me not knowing anything about birds :-) "You're fine, Rina. I just wish I could find a book to approve for you. I did take a look at the first 12 pages of your TBR but did not find anything other than you like much the same genres as I do. But, I wasn't shopping your list to add to mine, so I quit! LOL
Amanda wrote: "Does this one
work for option 2?"Amanda, in view of this pandemic and the fact that libraries are closing and thus making it harder to obtain books, I will accept this bird as a bird of prey. I cannot identify it specifically, but identifiers are visible (wings, tail, bill).
I love that you identified all the birds on the covers! Would this one be acceptable? It isn't a photo but has lots of details.
Thanks!

I will accept this as an owl.

Hi there, I'm thinking about using The Overstory for your task, option 1.It's not about gardening, but it is about environmentalism. It's fiction: nine linked stories of people whose lives were saved or changed by trees. They come together to save the last remaining bit of forest.

I will approve this, Bucket, and add it to my own TBR list.
I think a good fit for the gardening task would be The Year of the Flood as it focuses on a sect called God's Gardeners. From the wikipedia: "They are vegetarians devoted to honoring and preserving all plant and animal life, and they predict a human species-ending disaster, which they call "The Waterless Flood"." There really is a lot of gardening in the plot because daily life in the sect revolves around taking care of the communal garden and the bees that they keep.

Based on title and description (or if you have read it) would The Victory Garden be acceptable for Option 1? "Garden" is in the title, and the description says "Emily volunteers as a “land girl,” tending to the neglected grounds of a large Devonshire estate. It’s here that Emily discovers the long-forgotten journals of a medicine woman who devoted her life to her herbal garden. The journals inspire Emily, and in the wake of devastating news, they are her saving grace."
I haven't read it yet, so I can't say how much of the plot actually involves the garden or her work as a land girl.
