This thread is open to discuss The Hiding Place/The Taking of Annie Thorne by C.J. Tudor.

Synopsis
The new spine-tingling, sinister thriller from the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Chalk Man.

One night, Annie went missing. Disappeared from her own bed. There were searches, appeals. Everyone thought the worst. And then, miraculously, after forty-eight hours, she came back. But she couldn't, or wouldn't, say what had happened to her. Something happened to my sister. I can't explain what. I just know that when she came back, she wasn't the same. She wasn't my Annie. I didn't want to admit, even to myself, that sometimes I was scared to death of my own little sister.

The synopsis for the UK version is more appealing so I went with that:-)

Laura | 9707 comments I'm looking forward to reading this one!

message 5: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Damn, I almost forgot about this one, I bought the paperback when we first discussed reading it, so I am ready.

Stacey | 897 comments I borrowed the audiobook, so I'm good to go as well.

message 7: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Did anyone get to read any of this book yet?

message 8: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments I forgot to bring it to work today. I will start tonight or tomorrow.
You?

message 9: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Nope, I'm still working on When We Were Vikings.

Stacey | 897 comments I started but I can wait and read something else until you are ready.

message 11: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I'll switch back and forth and try to limit my news watching

message 12: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Look for different topics!
I just googled science news, and I found out that astronomers have perhaps figured out how big the Milky Way is!!!!! That's cool news.

message 13: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments That is cool news! Thanks for sharing that Jenny.

Please don't feel you need to wait for me. Read as fast ( or slow) as you like. My reading has hit a bit of a curb.. I can't make my buddy reads fit my current challenges so I 've had to bump them lower in my reading plan than I would like.

message 14: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Don't feel bad. I haven't really started yet either. I am trying to finish up some books for Uno, and one of them is so good I am savoring it and reading slowly- The Sun Down Motel. It puts a kink in all good plans when that happens. We'll get to it!

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Two of my GR 's friends really liked your current read!

message 16: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Clearly, they have good taste.

message 17: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Teehee.

message 18: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I did read the prologue of this one!! It was suspenseful and gruesome

message 19: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Ha, they do!

Stacey | 897 comments I'm finishing another book today or tomorrow then I'll get back to this as I need it for a challenge. Hope you are enjoying your other reads, I'll have to check out The Sun Down Hotel.

message 21: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments The first book I read from the Sun Down author is brilliant. No need to read in any order- it is not a series, but try The Broken Girls as well.

Stacey | 897 comments Jenny, I definitely have to check that one out. Thanks!

message 23: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I finished the first 5 chapters but that's as far I got so far. I 'm hoping it picks up because it's not holding my attention.

Stacey did you like it?

Stacey | 897 comments It was not what I expected and it is a bit slower than the last. I liked it a lot better than Chalk Man, though. It was still dark but at least some of the characters had some redeeming qualities. I think that is one of the things I have a hard time with with Tudor; I didn't like anyone in the Chalk Man. Without that it feels just dark with no hope at all.

Give it time (or another try), it is still slower but it did come together more at the end.

message 25: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments That's exactly why I 'm not liking it so much... Tudor's writing is dark and there is nothing redeeming about this MC or at least not so far. I 'll keep plugging along but a couple of chapters / day is all I can manage.

Matthew Ridley | 35 comments I’m only about 40 pages in but I’m enjoying it so far. I thought I’d be reading loads with the lockdown but I can’t concentrate

message 27: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments I'm having the same issue. I have started a lot of books, including this one, but my mind wanders, and I stop. I have been binge watching true crime documentaries and reruns of Eureka. I have never watched true crime stuff before. Not sure why my brain is in that mood, but Eureka is one of my favorite ever tv shows.

message 28: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I'm 47 pages in and slowly reading! I think I will do my best to read at least a chapter a day and then I will at least feel l am making slow progress.

message 29: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments If you guys are still here, Hi!
I apologize, I totally forgot to read this book. I brought it to work, started it, and then it had other things put on top of it. I will get to it eventually, but are you interested in a buddy read of something else again? Maybe we can be lucky like we were for When We Were Vikings.

I just picked up Valentine by Elizabeth Wetmore , Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor , Weather by Jenny Offill and The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave . Any of those sound good?

Stacey | 897 comments Jenny, I was just thinking of another buddy read. As for the Hiding Place, I'd hold off as it is really dark and I find myself needing a break or at least something a bit less dark.

I'm up for any of those. Valentine is probably the only one I'm iffy about but sometimes its good to read things I wouldn't normally pick. Hurricane sounds great, but I don't think I can get it anytime soon. There are wait lists for all at the library. Weather I can get the quickest and I might be able to get the ebook really soon. I can pick up any of them on audible except Hurricane Season; they only have it in spanish.

message 31: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments I am open to other suggestions as well, and I have a large stack of other titles. Always.

If any sound best, or are easiest to get, let's go with that, or wait to see if we get any other takers.

message 32: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Hi Jenny and Stacey! I'm still here too. Sorry, I dropped the ball on this one too- I found it too slow to get into. I 'll try and get back into it again at a later date.

I 'd love to do another buddy read. I can get them all from my Overdrive account except Hurricane Season.

Weather will come in first. It should come in before the end of next week. ( I'm hoping over this weekend!) The others I might have a 4 week wait time. Jenny you have interesting picks ( I mean that in a good way) I absolutely loved When We Were Vikings.

I have a small selection here; my library has been closed for 7 weeks and I was a frequent patron. I do have Wool Omnibus that I 'd like to read if you both haven't. It might be interesting to buddy read.
I also have : Dead to Her
The Chestnut Man
The Bungalow
Big Lies in a Small Town
The Last Original Wife

I also have the book Jenny suggested before but I forget what it's called. The book about astronauts and alternate time lines ( I think? )

message 33: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments It took me a minute, but I think you were referring to Light from Other Stars. I haven't read it yet. Add it to the ever expanding list.

I read the Wool books recently, but they are really good, I would not mind discussing them.
I read the Chestnut Man- very good book.

Big Lies sounds good, and maybe the Last Original?

Yes, that's the one. Light from Other Stars. I couldn't remember the title. I also have One of Us Is Next & The Winemaker's Wife

Do we want to start with Weather since Stacey and I both can get a copy of that quicker then the other picks, then a pick from Stacey's list when she puts it up tomorrow /later today and then one of mine. We should be able to go back to one of Jenny's picks again after that!

message 35: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Brilliant idea.
I was just thinking we could make a list of potential TBR list books from each of us and just go from one person to the next, with the caveat that the book is of interest and available.

Might be a good way to get to some of the books that we all meant to read a while ago. Just a thought.

Do you want to request a BR for Weather?

message 36: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Sure, I 'll make it for next Monday (11th) and if Stacey and I get copies sooner we can decide when we can fit it in with our other challenges.

message 37: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Now that Uno is done, I know I am going to miss a team challenge. Are there any good ones going on?

message 38: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments My three are in progress and I haven't seen anything new yet (team) They are all fantastic
Gift Exchange
The Amazing Race
Clue

message 39: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Let me know if a new one comes up please.
I am hoping there will be a Wheel challenge soon.

message 40: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Sure, if I see anything I 'll let you know:-)

message 41: by Jenny (new)

Stacey | 897 comments Chestnut Man and Big Lies in a Small Town were both excellent. Highly recommend.

The Boy from the Woods by Harlan Coben and Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson are on my to read list if you are interested some time in the future.

I was able to get the ebook for Weather, just need to figure out how to read it on my iPad. I also have a hold for the audiobook.

message 43: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Nothing to see here is amazing!!!!!
I have not read a Coben book in years. He is often fun though.

The Boy from the Woods by Harlan Coben was awesome!! I like his stand alone books better than they series- which is unusual for me as I love series!

message 45: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I have Weather by Jenny Offill , Stacey, how about you?

message 46: by Jenny (last edited May 04, 2020 08:26AM) (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Just to throw a few more potential future titles out there...
(I am reading the new Murderbot book, and I only have a few pages left. I don't want it to end so I am putting it off.)
Books I have bought and not read yet...
Qualityland, A Memory Called Empire, The Book of Koli, Boy Swallows Universe, The Truants, Providence, Imaginary Friend, A Good Neighborhood, Deacon King Kong, The Revisionaries, The Extinction of Menai: A Novel

Stacey | 897 comments Laura wrote: "I have Weather by Jenny Offill, Stacey, how about you?"

I have it, and I only have it for 2 weeks, so I am ok with starting early.

message 48: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Does Thursday or Friday work for both of you?

message 49: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8054 comments Absolutely!

Stacey | 897 comments That works
