ABANDONED. 60s/70's book about dragons and sunsets

I'm trying to find a book my friend told me she read when she was little. She thinks it was a 60s or 70s book. It was about dragons and how they are responsible for the sunset and the men in the book are scared of the sunset and try to kill the dragons with arrows. She said there were pictures of dragons circling the sun.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Does your friend remember whether it had a European or Asian setting?

I think she mentioned red indians. Also it mart have been an educational book about sunsets and sunrises
