I was startled to find this book set in the USA as I thought this group was dedicated to reading UK-set stories. American mysteries are generally too gritty for me, and this one offered plenty of blood and battering, plus ghastly, inventive murders. Despite my usual preferences, I raced through this book, bowing to the author's tight plot, careening action, and simmering suspense. Psychologically sound, the characters were properly motivated and even the unexpected ending made sense. Courtroom dramas are generally a great deal calmer than this one, but it will keep you turning pages, with dread at times, and with ultimate satisfaction in a good read.

I wondered about the choice as the descriptions talked about Hollywood I haven't bought it and now I won't.

Just started this novel by an Irish author that was published in the UK before it hit the US..... so I suppose that makes it British...? Although I don't know if the hero has British background, which would definitely have it fall into the definition agreed in another thread.

(That's on the cover, so hardly a spoiler.) A little nasty so far, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it pans out.
Christina, since the hero seems to be an American lawyer, I suppose the Irish author provides the UK connection.

There is a guideline about what constitués a British mystery for this group.
There is a guideline about what constitués a British mystery for this group. Am sure David can point to where it is
Just being an author in the UK would only be one/three criteria I believe hopefully the setting is UK???
All finished. Apart from the super-gory finish, it was okay. The author did a good job keeping us misdirected throughout.

You're right, Beth. I read David's original email, thanks to you. The UK author was the only one of the three criteria.
