ABANDONED. before 90's scifi book man recruited for mission given powers

I read this book from the library in the early 90's but is older i believe
a woman recruits a man for some kind of mission to an alien world.

he is given cellular shape shifting and the mental power to create an electro-magnetic torus in the air that can fire lightning bolts.

he gets to the planet in an airplane modified with fuel tanks that are bigger on the inside.

but it is destroyed on arrival and he is falling so he grows his arms into bat like glider wings and lants on top of s towering plant? thats all i remember
