SOLVED. Novel- Sammy murders Frankie in Italy and steals his identity? [s]

This is an odd request, as I've never read the book- only an extract from it. The extract was about a man called Sammy who had murdered his friend Frankie, or Francis Beaumont III (in Italy) and had taken on his identity. He had had a call from a police inspector called Inspector Bianco and was preparing to impersonate Frankie to convince the police that he was alive. Then at the end of the extract he was stood on his balcony waiting for the police, but when Bianco arrived, Sammy's mother was also with him.
I literally don't know any more than that- I'm a teacher and I did the extract with a class as part of an exam paper.
