This topic is open for discussion of Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

Book Synopsis:
“Dead girl walking”, the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret”, the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.

In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the multiple-award-winning Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia’s descent into the powerful vortex of anorexia, and her painful path toward recovery.

I'm finishing up a book and looking forward to starting Wintergirls today!

Kate ★ (spillsandspoils) | 83 comments So I started reading already.

K~Terror (k-terror) | 5600 comments @Kate - I'm right there with you... (view spoiler)

I'm up to 10.00 now. I had to get used to the writing style at first because I was listening on audio & it was sort of confusing. I have the kindle version too so ended up following along the first few chapters on both kindle/audio to get a better understanding of what was going on. The way it flows kind of reminds me a bit of Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me books - which I liked. So far I'm finding this story interesting.

Kate ★ (spillsandspoils) | 83 comments Kristin, I could see how the audio version could be confusing as there are random thoughts and crossed out words strewn in the pages. Good thing you have your kindle version with you! I wish I could concentrate like you do because audio books don't really work for me.

I just finished 17.00 now. (view spoiler)

My friend warned me that the audio will "beep" over the crossed out words but even still, it was weird and I did need to sort it out with the kindle before I could listen to the audio. (By the way, audios were an aquired taste for me - I had a hard time at first listening to them. My mind would wander and I wouldn't even realize it until minutes later... Then I'd have to back up.. LOL! Now I usually prefer them because I have more time to listen to them than I do to sit and read. (Unfortunately!).

I just got to chapter 19 and (view spoiler)

Kate ★ (spillsandspoils) | 83 comments Kristin, how long did it take you to get used to the audio? I tried doing that awhile back while washing the dishes and I totally forgot about it. Haha, maybe I should practice listening to it more? Lol

So I finished 33.00 and (view spoiler)

I can't remember how long it took me to get used to audio because I think it was so gradual. Maybe try starting off with more light, fun or action type books.. where you don't have a ton of details that you have to really pay close attention to. My friend recommended starting with The Help - which I guess turned out to be a good starter audio.

I'm just a couple chapters ahead at 35.00

I don't think it is too late and I believe you can catch up fast because it is kind of a short read.

I have just finished reading the book. It is amazing how it is short yet provides a lot of room for pondering. (view spoiler)

I'll definitely chat with you - it's a very thought provoking book! Like Kate said, it's a quick read - it only took me a day or two.

I'm not feeling well, so I'm just laying in bed, listening to the book.

Thank you. Yeah, the 00.number.00 thing was weird at first, I thought there was something wrong with my copy, until I looked on this thread. I still find the beeping strange.
