- a world where the village of men and the forest have a truce, and the Hounds are the link for without them there are no Hunters, and the men will starve. Billi is an oddity, a one legged Hunter, for the Hound that came to his door was a three legged one, the first ever seen. He isn't a very good Hunter until the day of the Wood Hunt when he kills the Great-Boar and breaks the bad luck at hunting. He finds shiny stones and meets the Tinkerer beguilers, they'll take his stones but won't give him gold. The traders want everything but for little but now he's a proper Hunter he's got meat and hides and pelts to trade, and the maids suddenly begin to notice, nine years too late. The world suddenly comes to call on Stumpy Billi, Rabbit the hoppity Hound, and One-shut the one-eyed cat and the only peace is in the green, in the Forest with it's draconian Laws, and the hunting beasts, and the Great Hunter.
