Super excited about this! Finishing Leigh Bardugo’s other series in the GrishaVerse. But this duology was written so you can read it even if you haven’t read the other books.

I am about 25% of the way through this book at the moment (my hold came in a few days ago so I went ahead and started), but I'm kind of having trouble really getting into it so far. I'm not crazy about the setting for some reason, but even more than that, I don't really *feel* for these characters.

Have you read the other series by Leigh Bardugo set in the same universe? Or is this your first book by her? I haven’t started Six of Crows yet but I’m wondering if since I’ve almost finished the other series I might be more connected to the world she’s created.

I finished it today! Gave it 4 stars. It took awhile for any action to happen but I did like it. Some of the characters reminded me of characters in other books I’ve read. Also some things I thought were predictable but I did enjoy it and I’m excited to find out what happens in the next book.

I tried reading this book a couple years ago but couldn't get into it. I decided to give it another go this month. I'd heard good things, and it has such a high rating here on GR. Unfortunately, this book & I are not meant to be.

These characters are lackluster at best. There is practically no backstory on any of them at all until 1/3 of the way through. Even then, their backstories come in giant info dumps, and the personalities & demeanors of the present-day characters themselves never seem to jibe with their past selves. I never got a sense of, "I can see why this character is the way he/she is," based on the backstory.

They all feel one-dimensional, and they lack depth to the point that I care almost nothing for any of them. None of them has a strong voice, and I continually had to ask myself who was narrating because, despite there being so many characters, all of them blurred into one big, boring mass.

With all that being said, the author has painted a vivid portrait of the setting itself, which did grow on me somewhat. There was plenty of action, and I assume, for someone who could connect with the characters, that it was suspenseful. But because I didn't relate to a single one of them, I honestly didn't care what happened to them, which made the action seem dull.

All of this to say that I have decided to abandon this book. I rarely abandon books because I don't like the idea or feeling of leaving them unfinished, but every time I crack open this book, I am thoroughly bored. I know I'm only reading it because I feel compelled to finish rather than actually wanting to finish. I'm aware that I am being especially hard on this novel, but I feel like I've wasted my time with it. I made it 43% of the way through, but the thought of attempting to trudge another 57% seems like a colossal waste of time.

I really hope the rest of you enjoy this book way more than I have!

Started today, I have read The Ninth House, and it was a four star for me, cus it took me a bit to get established. Might take a bit here as well, but I do like it, and want to read her other books as we move along. Ruthie, if there are any of her books that you have not read, or want to re-read, let us add them for future reads!

I read Ninth. I am looking at Scars: should I read Thorns, first? And I have a mean crush on Kaz so far. The only time I have had a pretend crush was in 1987, Roland of the Dark Tower. Huge tat of him on my leg, hahaah.

I think after we read Crooked Kingdom next month you could read her other three book series (the books are really short) Shadow & Bone, Seige & Storm, and Ruin & Rising. Because they have the introduction and some information on the character that is in King of Scars. I just read them in January/February otherwise I'd read them with you! But you don't have to! I have a friend who read King of Scars without reading the other series

I am pretty neurotic about reading preceding books, but if we make the Buddy Read cut for King of Scars, I will join. Or maybe someone will want to Buddy on those three, hint hint, Thread!
