I'm not sure why he was so cruel. He was bitter about his situation and thought Ginny would be his answer to happiness. It's funny that Imogene was worried about his recognizing her, but him recognizing her would have been the best thing to ever happen to her.
At the time I thought he didn't want to live and was angry that she saved his life. Later in the book we find out he sawed his own hand off to escape. That showed he really did want to live. I have no idea why he was so cruel to her. It made no sense. I was really hoping he would recognize her.
I don’t understand why he was so angry with her. Yes, he focused all of his frustration and anger at her because she just happened to be there but it was so very cruel and unmerited.
I never understood why he was so angry with her either. I also thought he didn't want to live but then when we found out what he did to his hand so he could get away, that eliminated that theory.
I thought for a hot minute that he might have lost the will to live but he dispelled that pretty quickly.
I think she was simply the most convenient target for his anger and frustration at his situation. The fact that he cut off his own hand doesn't mitigate the obvious pain and suffering he endured and was still enduring. People lash out when they are in pain even if they don't intend to.
