SOLVED. Indie sci fi trilogy with spaceships called dragons

I got this trilogy from a convention (DragonCon, in Atlanta) back in 2015. I only ever read the first few pages of the first book, but I'd like to read it again. The first one was called something like "Bringing the Dragon" or "Bending the Dragon" or something like that, and had a black cover with part of an orange red planet on it. The only plot details I can remember is that the spaceships were called dragons, and they might have been alive. The second and third book had the same title but with a 1 and 2, like "Ascendance I" and "Ascendance II". They also had black covers with orange red planets on them.

This is pretty obscure, so any info is helpful! Thanks in advance!

Found it myself! It's "Drawing the Dragon" by April Adams :)
