Other: Is called Thea for short. At the age of four her parents died together in a mine accident leaving her and her two year old brother, Albert, in the care of her sixteen year old brother, Mark, and the thirteen year old twins, Sara and Oliver. A year later her oldest brother died in a mine accident. Four years after that (when she was nine), her sister was brought home by one of her friends, bleeding. While the bleeding soon stopped, the wound had gotten infected, and as they could not afford a doctor she died. Last year Thea’s remaining older brother died in another mine accident. This year Thea entered the Tesserae for herself and Albert because she could think of no other way to get the food they needed. She has begged the family of a friend of hers to watch her brother while she is away and if she does not come back.
Sara taught Thea how to make and shoot slingshots, and Thea has often been able to shoot small birds and squirrels with them. Sara also taught Thea how to sew, cook and make fires. While Thea does not know this, Sara was injured when she was stabbed by a buck she had been hunting to help feed them. Thea has done all the cooking and mending since her sister’s death.
Her father promised, the morning of the day he was killed, that when he got back from the mine he would tell Thea the story of a man turned into a beast and the beautiful girl who rescued her. This was Thea’s first encounter with the breaking of promises, and she now considers nothing less than death an excuse for breaking a promise.
