Death of a Red Heroine (Inspector Chen Cao #1) by Qiu Xiaolong

Seems like a good police procedural that takes place in China. Qiu Xiaolong book Death of A Red Heroine is the first in this series.

Susan | 8 comments I read Death of a Red Heroine a few years ago and have read one other in the series since then. They are good police procedural sand also give some insight into the culture of China. I have another in the series on my shelves, but just haven't gotten to it.

Gary Van Cott | 63 comments I have enjoyed reading this series. The author has altered history a bit since it seems to be set in the early 1990s but with cell phones. He has another book which has already been published in France but is not due out in English until July 2015.

Sounds good Gary. Thanks for letting us know about this.

Gary Van Cott | 63 comments The reason (I think) that the books are set in the time period they are is that the author doesn't want them to be too many years after the Cultural Revolution. If they were more current, the survivors would be too old for the plots to work. Knowing some modern Chinese history is helpful to understanding these books.
