Have you read Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion?

I am going to put that one on the list if essays win! Thanks for the tip DGirl!

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I think I'm letting this one up to fate. I normally only vote my one free point anyway, but I'm really good with any of these- so no vote for me.

Amy wrote: " I think if Journalism wins, I have plenty, but I want to read Unbelievable. And before it is hopefully no longer relevant."

I would definitely join a buddy read for this should Journalism win. Unfortunately, I don't think it will ever NOT be relevant.

Amy, did you watch the netflix show?

message 54: by Idit (new)

Idit | 1028 comments I don’t mind which wins, but assume Relationships will win hands down

message 55: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12930 comments What Netflix show? And no, because while I watch a hell of a lot of TV, not yet netflix. I couldn't even spell it without spellchecker. But we are on for the buddy read. It might just win....

I have over 50 to read this weekend for work. Do not need more even if they are rather different and nothing to do with senior sciences.

I have to be in just the right mood to read essays. I usually prefer longer forms of writing.

I like essays - but not to read the same way as a book. I read 2 or 3 at a time between other reads. And given I commute on public transportation, they are really good reading in short spurts like that. If essays win - and I'd really like it to -- I suspect it will be one of those tags where members limit themselves to reading only
1 or 2 essay collections. Essays are basically not written to be read in one fell swoop but individually.

Those of you who are science geeks, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson, plus his newly published book, are collections of essays he wrote for journals and has now compiled in one volume. I enjoyed Astrophysics and it isn't long.

Most people have We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy in their TBR - it's a collection of Ta-Nehisi Coates essays.

There are many humorous essay writers too.

I use essays -- and short stories -- as a quick relief from bigger or more serious reading. Or as a way to transition into a new read if I've just come out of reading something engrossing like the world of GRRM or HP.

Essays won't be like reading a book but it can be a great moment of relief while you continue to plow through Proust or that chunkster, need a break from the global news of the day, or even just get read something different from your usual genres.

That's my homage to the essay, folks!

Hebah (quietdissident) | 675 comments At the risk of jinxing essays in the vote by continuing to talk about them, it's a resilient category with a lot of range that means I bet everyone could find something to interest them. You want funny? There are plenty of humorous collections out there. You want slice of life? Yep. You want a dive into a particular niche topic by one or more experts in that field? You're covered. Want some hard-hitting social commentary? Oh yeah. You want to read about other book lovers and the quirks of a readerly life? Essays, baby.

It's easy to slot in an essay collection around your other reading and just dip in and out of it, read one or two before bed or while you're waiting in a doctor's office. Short-form writing like essays (or stories) can also be a good way to shake off a reading rut.

Anita Pomerantz | 9282 comments I love seeing the love for essays! (okay some hate too but I am choosing to willfully ignore that lol)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11074 comments In case no one has mentioned this... 🤨 I noticed that a lot of essay collections are written by journalists, such as Coates' collections mentioned by Theresa. If this was politics, some might be willing to compromise or make a deal. Unlike politics, we can buy extra votes. Wait... maybe that's like politics too. 🤔

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Not to sway anyone, but I picked a journalism book up from the library yesterday... 😉

message 64: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15539 comments Check out the list here. I actually have quite a few of these in my TBR.

Eek, did not realize there were two Unbelievable's out there.
I was referring to the one about rape. Plus the Neflix show named Unbelievable based off the true story/book also.

Amy, which one were you referring to?

message 74: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12930 comments Sounds right up your alley Nicole!

Other Nicole has straightened us out yet again, birthday twinette. I did mean the political one, not the rape. Sorry....
