"I have to say that the Tescos 'one-way system' with staff marshalling people round was complete chaos. Works great until some dithering idiot stops to consider their option for 5 minutes in the sweets and crisps aisle, no overtaking allowed, and clogs the whole system up."

I'd best stick to delivering their stuff rather than buying it then, because, when shopping, I am that dithering idiot!
Instead, I've had a casual stroll round our local Waitrose, having waited in a very orderly queue for 15 minutes just to get into the store - no one way system or marshalling of customers once inside, other than at the tills. Fish and meat counters remain open, but some very empty shelves still - it looked like Col. Sanders had raided the chicken aisle :)
Another shelf had only two bags of spelt organic wholegrain flour and a light dusting to show where the ordinary stuff had been.
I saw a couple, who were in the queue ahead of me being told that as they were from the same household only one of them would be allowed in. The husband (?) said he'd go back to the car and that he'd be on the phone to hear what was on the shelves. Is this going to become a thing, then? One person per car in the car park and a store full of people with phones glued to their ears saying "Well, they've got some of this but none of that. What do you want me to do?"

I'm so looking forward to Asda in the morning (not). Standing in the cold queuing up to get in, plus we have Mum's shopping to do as well as our own. Her latest addition to her (twice as long as ours) list is a new kettle, cos her other one blew last night, and the travel one she took from the cupboard "doesn't even fill my hot water bottle". 🙄

Isabella | 1368 comments Thinking about my remnant parcel which came this morning. About half is disappointingly greige and brown (not my favourite colours) but there's a lovely piece of patterned voile and some lavender and lime prints which should combine well.

All I need now is imagination - time isn't likely to be an issue in the circumstances.

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments Had to pop out to pick up a click & collect order from Screwfix. The wash basin hadn't been draining properly for several days, so I was taking advantage of the weekend to unclog the waste pipe. Unfortunately, the waste pipe had other ideas and decided to snap in two. I was very relieved to find the shop was still open for click & collect, so I didn't have to wait for a new pipe to be delivered.

TheFoe | 2638 comments Just went on a nice walk on the trailway listening to KEXP on my headphones. It was actually really nice as they were playing ambient music, so I turned the volume down a bit so I could listen to the sounds of nature, the 2 sounds mixed really well. Everyone I passed said hello, so it didn't feel quite so lonely. :-)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments ... following a Frog around the Garden! - LOL!!!

He came out to say Hello while I was watering the Flowerbeds and seemed to be enjoying his unexpected shower so I gave him a very gentle extra sprinkle with the Hose Pipe and then took a walk with him from the Birdbath to the Shed, and then onto the Greenhouse before seeing him disappear into one of the several Frogitats that we have spaced out around the Back Garden.

Luckily I had already lifted and watered underneath that one before putting it back in place - so I think that he will be feeling happy enough with his new Home from wherever he came from ;o>

I would have asked him? ... but our new bottom of the Garden Neighbour caught me in mid-conversation with Mitzi earlier on this Morning as we sat out having our Breakfast together on the Patio ... and then again couple of hours later chatting to a Squirrel who was up our Pear Tree ... and so he has probably already come to the conclusion that I am only just one Sandwich short of a Picnic?!! ... Hee, Hee, Hee!!! ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Anyone getting a bit fed-up with the number of Companies that keep on with sending out 'great' ideas by Email on how best to cope with being locked-down in Quarantine?

Lakeland Ltd have suggested today that I could start making my own Pasta? - yet they have closed down their own online Shop and so, even if I did have some Flour in at the moment, all of the Specialist Equipment that they are picturing as being needed to make proper Pasta would have to be searched for and bought from elsewhere, like off eBay or Amazon.

They were suggesting that I could also be making my own Bread in one of their exclusive Remoska Electric Cookers last week.

If they keep this up we will all get used to buying everything that they sell from elsewhere and not be needing anything more from them when they finally reopen - and I'm pretty sure that's not at all what they had in Mind when they first came up with the bright idea of sending out these Emails.

Today I shall mostly be sulking because I haven't got any Flour, or a Remoska Electric Cooker, a Ravioli Tray Mould, and a Pasta Rolling Machine.

message 420: by Brass Neck (new)

Brass Neck | 3979 comments So, I guess that makes you Flour, a Remoska Electric Cooker, a Ravioli Tray Mould, and a Pasta Rolling Machine short of an Italian meal and a side of bread then? Must be getting even more bonkers?

Serial Sock Trumpet (serialsocktrumpet) | 1998 comments crazy hearing the shortages in the UK. I wonder why it's so different over there, especially as you have much bigger supermarkets.
There were a few shortages here early on, due to panic buying, but in the last few weeks and now, you can buy everything you need. No stock issues, not in kerry ireland, anyway

Population size perhaps has an impact? The Republic has what, fewer than 5 million people. That's below Scotland, and less than a tenth of England's population.

That said, things are getting back to normality slowly in the supermarkets. Flour was the only thing unavailable, for me, last week.

Derek W | 1365 comments Been out shopping at the crack of dawn this morning. It's nice of Waitrose to keep the first hour off their opening times for the elderly and otherwise at risk to do their shopping. It's just a shame that my nearest branch is 30 minutes away and opens at 07:30!

Rig was a bit startled to be hauled out of bed at 06:15, walked, fed and then sent back to bed by 07:00, this morning.

Got to Waitrose at 07:20 and joined the queue of about 20 people waiting to get in so got in at opening time. Waitrose are at least stopping people who obviously don't qualify for privileged access though, which is more than Tesco seemed to be doing.

Got everything I wanted apart from strong white bread flour, so not too bad.

It's not so much the shortages for us here although they have obviously been quite challenging - it's far more the not being able to go out anywhere coupled with the inability to be able to get anything delivered.

Did look Suzy, but most of the bags were full sized bakery bags..and mum doesn't want that much! Fussy she is!

She seems to not be so overly pressed to get any now...blerdy typical of her!

But thanks for the links....i have saved them, just in case she changes her mind!

Sme good news though.....my brother came round today (he's a key worker)....bringing with him a home baked sour dough loaf. Never had sourdough before... but looks lovely. His missus has been baking all kinds of things..but they seem to be using other stuff to make their own flour. Bro said his wife is trying out an almold based flour, made from dried almonds they she grinding into a flour herself. Apparently this has less carbs in it....and they are both on a reduced carb diet currently. Be interesting to see how that develops.....i'm imagining her creating a kinda Macaroon loaf from almond flour! :)

Val H. | 22141 comments Today I tried to reacquaint myself with my sewing machine. It hasn't been out from under it's cover in quite a while and it was none too pleased about the rude awakening. I had to remember how to thread it, how to insert the bobbin and how to match the stitch I wanted with the correct width and tension. It took ages and there was much swearing and gnashing of teeth but finally I got one pair of pants taken up. All being well, I shall try for another two tomorrow - assuming I can convince it to switch from jersey to denim.

Here in Oz, clothing manufacturers/importers assume all women are 5' 10". I'm not. No matter how well fitted pants, skirts, dresses are, I invariably have to lift the hems. If Wondaweb is that stuff you iron on in hopes it will fuse permanently, that, to me, is a male solution. I suspect most women (of a certain age) prefer a properly sewn hemline.

Oh Lez! Sinusitis is awful! At least you know what it is. Do you have any antibiotics to hand? I know I've been caught unawares by it in the past and went to the dentist thinking I had the worst ever toothache. He wrote me a script for antibiotics and then said "That'll be £75 thanks". Won't get fooled again!

message 440: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments Luckily discovered that we were without water this morning. I say lucky because I normally just switch the washing machine on and walk away. Swapping notes over the fence with our neighbour, G said the workers restoring the park at the bottom of our street (after two and a half years' worth of drainage works) had severed the main. I then rang elderly neighbour B to tell her and that led to about an hour's worth of chat (B likes a natter!). I've got the jeans pinned and will sew them later.

Last night I tuned in to my first on-line gig. Melody Pool, a great favourite of mine, did a Living Room Sessions show - 10 songs, some old, some new, and two covers - Leonard Cohen and Martha Wainwright. Considering she lives at the back of woop-woop and has internet if you stand close to the window, it looked and sounded terrific. Gaffer tape to the rescue!

Yep, farming hasn't stopped, nor can it really!
Strangely I am busier than ever, working on my neighbours farm, as the other student lad now can't come. So I'm doing all his work too. I'm 2 minutes drive away so it's easy and convenient.

Up until a few weeks ago I worked with the farmers mum, who's 82, a great women, still feeding calves twice a day. But now we keep our distance due to her age, she hasn't stopped work though, just now does her jobs alone. I couldn't recommend working with someone of that generation enough, the knowledge she has after 50 years of Dairy farming is incredible. So a shame we now have to just chat at a distance.
