Oh, so "a couple of horror movies" now, should be matched with the second bottle of wine. Another option - three bottles and make your own movie!

Today finished P.Jackson's "The Beatles: Get Back" part one, loved it. Also finished Stephen Davis "Old Gods Almost Dead", it's a Stones biography, got to the time Mick Taylor left in 1974, not interested with the rest. Started https://www.amazon.co.uk/Out-Control-..., good stuff too.

As you can see am firmly stuck in 60s-70s.

2 bottles of wine in one night would have me on my back these days, Post. Had my rose and a couple of cans of cider. "The Dorm" and "When A Stranger Calls Back" were both pretty enjoyable, but "Christmas Slay"...such bad acting.

Serial Sock Trumpet (serialsocktrumpet) | 1998 comments 2 bottles = 2 legs akimbo.

Equation of the day.

message 3859: by Brass Neck (new)

Brass Neck | 3979 comments I was going to point out that the phrase legs akimbo would have had the dear departed Lez in apoplexy (or mild umbrage at least) since she was emphatic that only arms could be akimbo (hands on hips, elbows out) but it would seem that respectable dictionaries accept that either pair of limbs can be akimbo (or in C's case after deux bouteilles de vin, all four!).

A bit like the omicron panic in the UK. Never mind 'following the science' (the WHO said at the weekend that nobody in the 38 countries where the variant is rife has yet died, and the evidence does suggest that it's a mild thing at worst), just batten down the hatches in the bunker if the media start squawking that we're all doomed. I don't object too hard to giving them a couple of weeks to get things straight, but if it is a damp squib the restrictions must go again. Who was it said 'we have to learn to live with covid'?

message 3887: by Brass Neck (last edited Dec 07, 2021 04:59AM) (new)

Brass Neck | 3979 comments "Who was it said 'we have to learn to live with covid'?" - living with something usually means making sensible adjustments to ameliorate a problem not ignoring it completely and going round infecting everyone because, well, you're a free-born Brit and no-one can't tell you nuffink. Blind Col is 'living with' inoperable throat cancer and his adjustments are many and onerous not least of which is being fed and watered through a tube, he can't just blow off the latter because it's a pesky constraint as he'd die a lot quicker.

And clamping down has condemned many people to die from undiagnosed and untreated cancer, heart disease etc over this last 20 months. Some estimates put those in the many tens of thousands. Blind Col, and other like him have my utmost sympathy, but you have to consider when prevention becomes worse than the disease. A report today said that almost all children's education has suffered during the pandemic. You can't make up for that loss by blindly awarding them all A grades in non-exams either.

Isabella | 1369 comments There's no meaningful way to estimate how many might have survived if the pandemic had been dealt with differently or how many more might have succumbed to covid. It's all guesswork and "what if ..."

I have wondered whether it shouldn't simply have been left to run its course but I don't have the knowledge to make an informed guess. The Spanish flu in 1918 killed millions but how much were those figures exacerbated by the factor of a weakened population in the aftermath of war? Don't know.

The suffering isn't calculable or comparable. We just blunder along in the hope that the decisions taken are halfway sensible.

Brass Neck | 3979 comments "condemned many people to die from undiagnosed and untreated cancer, heart disease etc over this last 20 months. Some estimates put those in the many tens of thousands." but probably significantly fewer than the 125k+ Covid has reaped and that's with belated lockdowns, grudging requirements to wear masks and vaccines, no-one will know what it could have been if allowed to let rip - 250k, 500k? I accept there never was and never will be a perfect way to handle such a dreadful situation but what untimely little has been done was and is for the greater good. No-one knows whether earlier, harder lockdowns would have allowed the NHS to function and deliver more 'normal' health care, screening and operations but it doesn't seem outlandishly unfeasible to me.
