Been moving some logs around to make space to dump our old mattress in the garage until they reopen the dechetterie, currently closed as part of the Covid-19 measures.

Helen The Melon | 3419 comments Feeling sad 😢

Shopping chaos has even reached the relatively sparsely populated Highlands. Selfish stockpiling f**kers everywhere.

People are even driving up from the Central Belt and filling vans with whatever they can get at our local (not v large) supermarket.

My sister ventured to Inverness yesterday, to a wholefoods warehouse co-operative that has a shop attached to it (she goes every week, not stockpiling). It's tucked away on an industrial estate & even in there it was utter madness. They said that from today they will have to close the shop 'cos the staff can't cope, they will be taking orders by phone for collection until further notice.

So, today I shall mostly be at home feeling sad... time for some YouTube cat vids, I think...

My mum's had similar offers from her neighbours. She's terrified of the idea of extended self-isolation. I'm going to get her stocked up with books & movies at the weekend and then have to hope she & her friends will call each other every day to avoid excessive loneliness.

Rest of the day we will be at home apart from the two walks out with Rig,

The supermarkets have a 3 week waiting delivery list but say they will give priority to the elderly and infirm from next Monday. I’m usually a glass half full person, but right now I haven’t even got a glass. Sorry to burden folk with this. 😥

Here's hoping the supermarket can sort a delivery out for you sooner Lez. It is getting trickier for those that must stay indoors. The supermarkets need to get on and employ more drivers and somehow find more delivery vans sharpish. It's all going hell for leather presently.

So sorry to hear you're in this situation Lez. Do try to get an order in early Monday to at least have a place in that queue. I think the supermarkets are realising that they are going to have to prioritise the elderly, infirm, disabled, ill, etc. I had an email from one of ours yesterday:

Priority deliveries
We have also introduced Priority Assistance home deliveries to help the elderly, people with disability, those with compromised immunity and those in mandatory isolation. To apply for Priority Assistance delivery, please complete the form at woolworths.com.au/priorityassistance

Fingers crossed you win out soon. There is a lot of advice around about boosting your immunity to any virus/infection out there and I'm sure you know what's best for you. Keep safe and let us know how you get on.

Selfish Stockpiling F**kers (yes, that's their official title now) and greedy supermarkets make me so sad/angry. The supermarkets should have implemented restrictions long before now.

If I was able to, Lez, I would buy what I could up here and drive it down to you this weekend. Feel helpless. Is there anything I could try and send you in the post?

Edit: My poor Mum has a v demanding, selfish "friend" who phoned her up yesterday just to complain & have a right good moan that her husband was only able to buy two bottles of wine (they have plenty of food). Ffs. Stupid woman, I wish I could show her Lez's above post.

I guess, like most of us, that the supermarkets were hoping people would do the right thing. Alas, other than perhaps stamping customers' hands with purple ink when they enter the store, there's not much they can do. Even limiting the number of items that can be bought doesn't work with the real scumbags, as they are buying one lot, putting it in the car and returning for a second and (probably third etc) go. I agree they've moved too slow.

The things you hear and read though are shameful. In the last couple of days the following are just a snippet.

A reader of one of the tabloids went to a branch of Sainsburys (who had dedicated the first hour for older and vulnerable customers) only to find there was no security on the door and younger people were entering as normal. Some of the young were literally pushing older people aside to get to the shelves, and when the reader asked one 'you really don't care do you?' he got the response 'not really, no'.

A woman with a two year old child got an email from her supermarket informing her that her online order had been cancelled. Obviously because of stockpilers grabbing everything.

On RadMac just this morning, Stuart told about a woman in Aldi trying to buy 42 jars of mayonnaise (wtf!). The staff told her there was a limit of four of any item.

Brass Neck | 3979 comments Whatever attempts are made by supermarkets to limit the altruism-deficient scumbags, none of it helps Lez or the likes of my mid-80s house-bound and multiply health-compromised parents (Dad has a DNR envelope sitting on the living room shelf which freaks me out every time I visit) nor the essential workers who can't physically get to one nor multiple supermarkets to scavenge with the anti-social hyena pack. Myself (an essential worker now apparently) and my sister both live at distance and the 'rents are totally without internet access. There needs to be a system to identify people in such a situation to prioritise food deliveries. But even this is flawed since it would have to be myself or sis who place the order or go to the supermarket on their behalf - what would folks say if we tried to join the elderly hour queue to buy stuff which would NEED to be in bulk since we can't pop over several times a week for them?

Sh*t's gettin' real and the real sh*ts are fanning the inevitable sh*tstorm no end.

Seriously though, if people can't behave and their behavior is endangering vulnerable people, there should be on the ground enforcement. Either by the army or police.
That's my opinion. These greedy fuckers or the ones spreading infection because of their own feckless selfishness should be dealt with.
It shouldn't be expected that our elderly have to run the gauntlet at a supermarket or elsewhere because of these scum.

Val H. | 22141 comments Today I'll mostly be feeling depressed because my 3 year old grandson's surgery (booked for Wednesday) has been cancelled today. My daughter and son-in-law have been battering their heads against a brick wall for the last two years trying to get a correct diagnosis for his developmental delays. He's been to various GPs, audiologists, speech pathologists, etc. They decided to by-pass the public system, found a lovely specialist who said his tonsils were huge and he was an urgent case for tonsils, adenoids and grommets. He told them they would be surprised by the difference it would make to his appetite, weight and height, as well as his speech. The surgery was fast-tracked to avoid any potential influx of Covid-19 cases and it was to take place in a smaller, regional hospital. Poor boy - who knows when it'll get done now.

message 234: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments I'm feeling better after hearing from my daughter that the surgeon phoned her himself to apologise and said as soon as it was possible, the surgery will go ahead. Fingers crossed. I've spent the rest of the day organising prints and frames to put up in a spare bedroom.

Today looks sunny day to drive to Atlantic coast (I know wild stony beach not far from Sligo 80 min. drive from us) for a walk and barbecue. Got nicely smelly applewood and cherry to make some cooking coal.

Got refused appointment with dentist as doing hygiene is not emergency.

TheFoe | 2638 comments Could the government not being back temporary ration books? In this day and age I'm sure they'd be able to make them nearly unforgeable.
I work for Lidls as a customer assistant and cant believe that they haven't restricted the number of items that people are buying. Putting profits before people's well being is unacceptable and needs to stop immediately! I worry for my 83 year old Mum who lives on her own and is now relying on my brother and myself to shop for her, but you can't buy what's not for sale. It's very frustrating to know that the action of the selfish impacts those most at risk.

So many people unclear on the concept; your dad not realising it's just as much, in fact more, about being infectious than getting it; panicking dimwits not realising they are creating the shortages they seek to avoid; Daily Mail readers following that rag's advice that it's a good idea to escape to a 'brilliant bolthole' in the north of Scotland, streaming into Inverness in their camper vans, bringing god knows what with them. And so on.

Serial Sock Trumpet (serialsocktrumpet) | 1998 comments Up to a small village shop today, I go every week to deliver Duck Eggs. What a pleasant contrast to the hell of supermarkets. I was able to get all I need in peace. Apparently they've seen a large increase in sales as people shop locally and avoid the supermarkets. Let's hope people remember to use them when this crisis is over.

Small village shops do so much more than sell food. They were telling me today how they not only sell phone credit but actually top up the phones of a good few people who can't do it themselves. Try getting Tesco to do that for you.

Val H. | 22141 comments Trying to fill in the hours without just watching TV or reading. I've done a load of washing and hung it out; done the dishes. I've rung two neighbours to check in how they're doing. Was rather shamed by B who has to be around 80 who said "I drove up to Oakleigh this morning, I was going to call in to see if you needed anything but your blinds were still closed." Then I dragged a really, really old exercise bike out of the garage and set it up on the back verandah. I managed 3km at a gentle 25kph; I'll have another go later. I have a friend who does 3 x 10km sessions every day - and he's older than me! He also walks to the local pool 3 times a day to do laps. He is going to be devastated by the pool closing, but he will go to the beach instead - and it's not a gentle, sandy beach he goes to, a rocky one with rough surf. Now it's back to my picture frames for a bit and then it might need to the telly. We watched Years and Years - also depressing as they used a pandemic to thin out the refugees in camps. I fear for the many refugee camps around the Syrian border, Turkey, Palestine, etc. We're now watching series 2 of Counterpart which is really testing my concentration. Is that Howard or Howard Prime, Emily or Emily Prime?

No pushiness but a clear divide between the "don't give a ****" and the paranoid at the extremes but most people are just being reasonably careful. It's pretty near impossible to keep the 2 metre gap in a supermarket.
