I'm listening to the sound of several Neighbours all busy with using their Jet Washers to clean out their collection of Wheelie Bins instead!

Brass Neck | 3979 comments I don't understand this fad for wheelie bin 'hygiene'. It never comes in the house, it has a close fitting lid and it's round the side of our house nowhere near any windows or doors but t'missus insists on putting a plastic bin liner in every fortnight? The garden waste bin stands next to it, has air holes in the sides and a pool of decompositional grool which pongs mightily in the bottom but she never fusses about that.

Speaking of wheelie bin collections we will be going from 2 wheelies and 3 small boxes for the recyclables to 4 wheelies in October (why do I need to sort my waste into 3 types when there will only be 2 recyclable wheelies?). We'll have no problem finding the space for them but as I wend my way to Blind Col's through the inner parts of Grimsby (who got their 2 new wheelies way before us suburbanites) all the terraced houses have entirely filled their small front space with the things (unless they've already filled the space with an old suite or similar!). In streets where the houses open directly on to the street what do they do?

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments We have ...

A Black Wheelie Bin for General Waste
A Brown Wheelie Bin for Glass, Plastic Bottles & Tins
A Blue Wheelie Bin for Paperwaste
and 2 Green Wheelie Bins for Garden & Food Waste

... plus a small Food Waste Caddy that lives in the Kitchen and the Council posts a very large Roll of Biodegradable Bags to be used in it through Letterbox once a year.

message 1862: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments We have:
1 green bin for general waste every 4 weeks
I blue bin for milk cartons, tins, degradable plastic trays etc. every 4 weeks
I burgundy bin for all paper and card every 4 weeks
I brown bin for garden waste every 4 weeks
I black box for glass, batteries and small electrical, every 2 weeks
I small grey bin for food waste every Monday
I bag on request for medical waste, nappies, etc.

message 1863: by Tim (new)

Tim Franklin | 10949 comments Thank heaven for small mercies. We've only got a black one for general waste and a green one for recyclables, plus a small brown caddy for food waste. The food one goes every week, the other two on alternate weeks. People in the village who need them also have large cloth bag things for garden waste. We got plenty of room for a dung hill so don't require that.

Serial Sock Trumpet (serialsocktrumpet) | 1998 comments No council bin collections in Ireland. All expensive private companies if you want a wheelie bin.

So we take our rubbish every now and again to a recycling waste centre, some 25 minutes drive away. Bag of landfill is 6 euro each. You prepay 3 euro for empty recycling bags that take plastic, tetrapacks etc, and then drop em off next time.
Tin cans and glass are put in free recycling skips in our local town.

So we have 2 wheelie bins, 2 other bins and various crates of glass/sacks of tin cans.
I envy those with council collections :0

message 1865: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22144 comments We have three wheelie bins: a small red one for general waste (weekly), a large yellow one for paper, cans, bottles, cartons, rigid plastics (fortnightly) and a green one for garden and food waste (fortnightly). We have three large open compost bins (about a cubic metre each) and we shred most paper which goes in the compost with all fruit & veg peelings, coffee grounds, tea leaves, lawn clippings and smaller garden waste. Soft plastics (schrunchable) can be dropped off at all supermarkets and all public libraries have collection boxes for x-Ray's, batteries, light bulbs, CDs, DVDs, audio and video cassettes. Our Council gives us three free heavy rubbish collections per year. You phone them by Friday, they pick up on Monday. I don't know what the cost is if you need more. And there's a Council Recycling Depot about 20 minutes away for paint tins, chemicals, electronic waste. That's free too, they only charge for gas cylinders.

Val H. | 22144 comments Spent much of today cutting up a tree and getting as much into the green bin as possible. We had a freak storm rush through Melbourne about 5.30 last night. It didn't last long but three people (including a 4 year old boy) were killed by falling trees, over 80,000 households lost power and more than half were still not back on the grid 20 hours later. One of our water-supply dams was contaminated so the eastern suburbs had to boil water for drinking and food preparation. We were busy chasing garden furniture and wheelie bins around the garden and didn't realise until this morning that a large part of a bottlebrush (in our garden) had fallen over the side fence and completely blocked the footpath. So it was on with our face masks and out with the chain saw, extendable clippers and secateurs to clear the debris. And, being Melbourne, we were in bright sunshine. I can feel I've caught the sun on my face - but only above the mask!

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Tonight I will mostly be ... doing whatever I can manage to help a Neighbour out by making up some Goodies for a Picnic Lunch & Teatime Hamper for 7 people for tomorrow.

Her Son is over from Nigeria and is in Self-isolating Quarantine at their Holiday Chalet in the Lake District and so her and her Husband are planning to go over and sit outside and share a Picnic together. Unfortunately though she has been struggling with Cellulitis in one of her Legs for a couple of months now and it looks like it is starting to flare back up again today so standing and cooking for any length of time would be extremely painful for her and definitely not a very good idea right now.

She told me earlier that she will have to send her Husband out to the Shops tomorrow morning to buy in some ready-made Picnic bits and bobs instead (however they are still Shielding and are both rather worried about having to do this) so I thought that I'd have a go at making up a few things and see if I can spare them needing to do a shop.

It's been a very long time now since I've last spent all that long in the Kitchen and putting anything like this together - but I'm going to take my time and pace myself throughout the night while I can make the most of having the Kitchen all to myself.

I've raided our fairly well-stocked Freezer and Cupboards and already knocked up a batch of Sausage Rolls and some mini Pizzas, and made a start on prepping several Sandwich Fillings. In a couple of hours after this rest period I'll be having a go at making up some Muffins, Fruit Tarts, and possibly a Tea Loaf as well.

I really wasn't sure if I'd be capable and up for doing this and so I haven't told my Neighbour about it yet - but I'm actually not feeling too bad so far and, best of all, I'm also getting a lot of satisfaction out of setting myself the challenge and really getting into it and enjoying it all as well ;o>

message 1883: by theDuke (last edited Aug 29, 2020 05:04AM) (new)

theDuke | 6492 comments Speaking of refuse collections...our local council changed the way waste is collected here last year. Everything changed..even the lorries & the staff that go in them! The old crusher trucks and & 'bin men' were retired/ made redundant....opting instead to scratch train brand new staff called "Environmental Waste Control Management Staff" - (What a pretentious mouthful of nonsense...they're still bin men...albeit new bin men!!) - It is now prohibited to put out any rubbish in the old non recyclable traditional black bin bags..........which is a bit of bugger given that i had only just bought a large number of new rolls when i got the communique about this new service a few days later. Black bags are now useless. The council don't take 'em,, nor the civic sites..and yet every grocery store here still sells them...or at least tries to.

Wheelie-bins are practically obsolete too. We still use our aging one to store the landfill only general waste in grey bags in. However, these bags must be taken out and placed on the roadside for collection, otherwise, the differently trained 'EWCMS' folks will ignore them, if they're covered up. It would seem that this new bunch of 'waste collectors' have had all knowledge of the invention of the wheelie bin removed from their memories. If they can't see the grey bags..they don't take 'em. I presume the reason for it, is because of the brand spanking new and very colourful compartmentalised collection trucks they now use. Very attractive trucks i cannot deny, but these new vehicles just have holes in the sides for the various different types of recyclable waste taken..no hydraulic bin mechanisms on 'em. They're also smaller, lighter, and run entirely on bio ethanol fuel. And as mentioned above, black bags are illegal...and grey biodegradable bags are in for general household waste...and that's the only type of bag the council will now take...and..they are supplied only by the council.

So currently....this is how we deal with our waste with the following measures:

- General waste that cannot be recycled yet - goes in grey plastic bags supplied by the council. collected once every 3 weeks, soon to be monthly.

- All uncooked food waste, placed in a biodegradable bag kept in a 14 year old broken green plastic caddy. (All cooked food waste..goes to the local wildlife.)

- Recyclable plastics and tins/cans/foil etc..goes in a new large flip over lidded heavy canvas blue waterproof weighted bag, supplied by the council. (All labels must be removed first. Any plastics not displaying the recyclable symbol..goes in the grey general waste bags). Collected once a week.

- All stiff cardboard packaging, goes in a new flip over lidded heavy canvas waterproof weighted red canvas bag. (but not newspaper/letters/general paper items - it's made of the same stuff ffs...why not?). Collected once a week.

- 'Normal' paper waste - goes in a large green plastic box (uncovered..so that's useless on wet days)....so we never use it. We have a far better system.....a garden incinerator. To which, we put any and all sensitive paperwork in it, letters, tissues..and other paper waste. And no..i don't care about the carbon footprint either, because i don't own a stinking horrible diesel car /or van that does far more damage than a garden incinerator does. Plus, there's too many identity thieves out there!

- Glass...goes in another but different but still large green plastic box, again uncovered....which we also don't use. We prefer to drive them the half mile up the road to the state of the art civil waste site, instead.

- Old unwanted/unworn clothes.....used but still in good nick..to the local charity shops. Knackered ones..get torn up into rags...i use a lot of rags when doing my DIY projects. :)

- Knackered shoes...goes to a local collection bin...and we don't care what then happens to them afterwards.

- Old paint tins and oil cans - civic site..or i clean them out and find a 2nd use for them.

- Grass & garden waste....we chuck it in the mostly deserted field next door...bar the sheep, & they eat it. Chomp chomp! :)

- Old timber....i never throw it out....wood can always be turned into something else. If rotten..it goes behind the shed..and the local insect & fungi population falls in love with me....again.

- Worn tyres & knackered car parts - don't drive.....don't have a car.

- Knackered electrical items - civic site.

- Knackered smelly old mattresses - civic site.

- Broken real wood furniture - repair, up-cycle...or use for firewood.
- Shitty chipboard furniture - civic site..sod it.

- Human waste - the bog. Where it goes afterwards..i care not to think about it.

I think that covers everything?

theDuke | 6492 comments Anyhoo...i;m currently working out volumes of materials required to build a new hand made garden path. Bought some moulds..and i'm going to try using cement dyes for the first time..hopefully achieve my own patterned design.

Plus measuring out a section of garden for a new stone circular patio which a new washing rotary drier will be placed. Our 40 year old washing drier finally collapsed last week. It's been doing a leaning tower of Piza impression for the last 10 years..and the timber decking is rotten....so it'll be nice to finally do something about it.

And if that's not already enough.....i'm still trying to get ANY summerhouse to go on the partially constructed decking framework, i was building back in early March......but stopped work when the whole world went to pot...thanks to a murderous bug.

Oh...yeh......i've got leaky pipe in my bathroom to fix as well.....and then there's man cave project i started 3 years ago..which i cannot do anything to it this year (couldn't get materials in lock down).

So whilst it sounds like I've loaded heavily me plate ..i haven't actually done anything for months, cos of the pandemic......til now.

Anyone with a vestigial brain cell can see the result of putting light weight waste like paper in an uncovered container. The paper blows happily round the streets on every windy collection day, into the gutters, hedges, water courses, onto wind screens ...

This, of course, enables councils to claim that they spend x% of council tax revenue on clearing litter, at least some of which is generated by their incompetence.

Lunch today! Prepare and chop roughly equal amounts of onion, celery and apple (bramleys give a bite but dessert apples are fine) and sweat them in oil for about ten minutes. Add to enough cheesy mash to bind the mixture, don't be mean with the cheddar. Place spoonfuls of the mixture on circles of puff pastry, fold into a pasty, sealing with egg wash, brush with more egg wash and bake for about twenty minutes in a hot oven or until crisp and lovely.

It's all part of the plan. They have a budget assigned, which means they must spend every penny of it, or face a possible reduction to their actual levels of spending in the following year. The value of the spending doesn't matter; merely that it gets done. 🤔

That's actually when I got finished, Grizzly! ... half 5 in the Morning! - LOL!!! ;o>

Still in so much pain that I haven't been able to lie down and get any sleep yet but, ohhh boy, did I enjoy myself!!! ;o> ... and everything thankfully came together and turned out perfectly - plus Sylvia's Face was just an absolute picture when I took it all round to her House at 8am this morning ;o> ... ;o> ... ;o>

I honestly didn't think that I still had it in me - but I couldn't not try to give it a go as Sylvia turned 80 during Lockdown this year and it's the first time this year that she will be getting to see her Son and his family who live way down South and it's been three years now since she last saw her other Son who lives in Nigeria.

It was too good an opportunity to miss to thank her for being such a kind and caring Neighbour to us over this last year - she was so incredibly kind to my Mum on her 80th Birthday whilst never letting on at the time to anyone that she had also just turned 80 herself during the first few weeks of the Lock-down.

I still had some beautiful Napkins and several dinky Bottles of Rose Lemonade left over from Mum's Birthday so I had already got those bagged up for her ... and then thought why not just see if you can still manage to do a bit of a one-off Baking session as well?

And it turns out I still can! - YAYYY!!! ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Ohhh, I've cut a few corners here and there, Val ;o>

I unfortunately can't stand for too long myself - as my Leg Muscles soon go into spasm and then rather alarmingly and painfully start to herniate if I force myself to stand for more than a couple of hours at a time.

The Mini Pizzas were simply just made out of a couple of our favourite Asda Mediterranean Vegetable Extra Thin & Crispy Pizzas that we always keep a handy stash of in the Freezer ;o>

I decided to use a Large Cookie Cutter to cut them to size, loaded them up like I usually do with extra mixed Peppers, Red Onion, Mushroom, some Sweetcorn, a good sprinkle of Tesco's Italian Seasoning, and a generous scattering of Extra Mature Cheddar plus a baby Plum Tomato on top ... and they all turned out beautifully.

And the Sausage Rolls were just a couple of packs of skinned Black Farmer Premium Pork Sausages wrapped up in some Jus-Rol Ready-made and Ready Rolled Puff Pastry.

I'm a very big believer in utilising, playing around with, and adding my own extras to shop-bought yummy things that really can't be bettered by me making them up from scratch ;o>
