suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I know, Poppet, and it's heart-breaking because the NHS loses so many damn good Nurses over this - the unbelievably crappy pay that they have to try and live on in return for doing a job that is SO special, SO essential and SO vital to us all that could even be said to be beyond having any kind of a price put on it ;o<

A local Nurse responded a few hours ago to the Post with the comment ...

"The next time that Boris Johnson develops any more kinds of respiratory issues and turns up in Intensive Care........ maybe we should just throw a throat lozenge at him and tell him to get lost!! and if his girlfriend was in labour right now? .... she could be told to go home, cross her legs, and hope to hold the baby in forever if Boris isn't up to doing the delivery himself!!.... but we would never do or say anything like that to anyone ever, would we and why? ......because WE ARE NURSES!! and WE WILL ALWAYS CARE!!"

Tim Franklin | 10949 comments Just for balance. This is the NHS deal agreed in 2018 covering three years. We will see what happens in the next award; due next year.
https://fullfact.org/health/nhs-pay-w...

Do those who are angry want the existing deal scrapped and replaced? Or are they after two slices of the pie simultaneously? What about people who work in those other sectors which have been just as vital - supermarket staff, pharmacy staff etc etc, and who have been just as exposed to risk in the nature of their jobs. You think they'll get an inflation busting pay rise funded by the taxpayer?

message 1509: by Brass Neck (last edited Jul 26, 2020 03:20PM) (new)

Brass Neck | 3979 comments I thought you wouldn't be able to let that one go!
"What about people who work in those other sectors which have been just as vital" - vital, yes they have been proven so but just as vital as Drs, nurses and care workers? No, you don't die because you can't get bogroll or have to join a socially-distanced queue. Nice try though.
"You think they'll get an inflation busting pay rise funded by the taxpayer?" - since they're not public servants, no. If the Tories get away with privatising the NHS then neither will the nurses, etc be.
It is difficult for the less informed who perhaps didn't realise they had a 3 year deal and it does play to the emotions that the Govt has, for a change, agreed to the increases recommended by the so-called 'independent' pay review bodies for other groups. It's also a sham because the Govt is not going to fund the pay increases so it's up to individual schools or academy chains to find the money from 'efficiency savings' = sack the classroom support assistants and increase class sizes, etc. It's not what it seems on the surface but then again what is under this govt?
Roll on Brexit though and it'll all be milk and honey for everyone.

Tim, I think that first and foremost they want for everyone to know the true reality, the full extent of just what a typical working day for them on the 'Front Line' actually entails - to get themselves heard and listened to on just how utterly exhausted and disillusioned, emotionally traumatised and broken in spirit such a huge majority of them are currently feeling right now.

Then we have Boris Johnson and various members of his Govt popping up on TV and making themselves look and sound good by regularly dropping extremely vague but nevertheless still heavily implied hints in so many speeches given throughout this Pandemic - about rewarding the NHS and ensuring that Nurses will be receiving a decent wage for a decent day's work?

And I'm afraid that this sadly led to so many Nurses actually starting to believe that these were real promises and genuine guarantees that were going to be honoured and realised - but no, it turned out only to be yet more spin with no substance at all to any of it.

The Nurses have just about reached breaking point and the very end of their tethers with all of this and they understandably feel angry and upset, exploited, deceived, and devalued by the Deals that were done between the Govt and their Unions.

This Article might also help to explain the situation a bit better ...

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020...

I don't really want to go there with you or with anyone else either on ever trying to prioritise, distinguish, or determine who is anymore or any less essential or vital as a Key Worker, Tim.

Each Job that you mention is quite unique, and is just as vital and as essential, but I don't really think that they should ever be all held up together in any kind of comparison with each other?

Nurses don't ever have to try to deal with being attacked and abused by crowds of irate shoppers on a daily basis over the stock shortages in the Supermarket Aisles - and Supermarket Staff don't ever have to break the heart-breaking news to family members that their loved ones aren't going to make it on a daily basis either, or get to hold the Hands of the dying in a final act of care as they take their last Breath.

Even if I could, I personally wouldn't want to be doing either Job right now.

Just me venting my own anger, frustration, and sadness at such bad things happening to wonderful people, Collette. It genuinely hurts me to get to see and to hear of such things as these going on in this day and age.

Oooh? - I've never tried Prosecco because I don't like Wine but those kinds of Afternoon Teas are quite a thing down here in Greater Manchester as well. I've often wondered with the larger groups of Ladies that I've seen enjoying them if they have needed to decide on a designated Driver in advance - just to make sure that everyone manages to get Home safely afterwards?! - LOL!!! ;o>

Hmmm? - how smooth and intense has your experience been with it so far? ;o>

I've come across a few absolutely fantastic Brands and Blends of Coffee in a handful of tiny independent Cafés over the years - but as I didn't have my own Coffee Machine at Home back then it never occurred to me to make a note of what it was that I was enjoying so much.

Ever since I bought myself a really fab little Filter Machine back in 2014 I have been on the hunt for my perfect Brand and Blend of Coffee and the closest that I've got so far is Lidl's Deluxe Java Sumatra.

What I'm looking for is a full-strength and full-bodied Coffee with a slightly smoky and a slightly honeyed flavour to it - but I've still not yet come across anything that absolutely hits the spot for me yet.

I think that I'm probably looking for a French Roast but Coffee can be SO expensive including p&p to keep buying ones that I'm not keen on - and I only want to buy Filter Coffee in small quantities because I want to brew and get to drink it at it's freshest once opened and there is only me that will be drinking it.

M&D are only into having the occasional 'treat' (?) of a Costa Skinny Decaf Cappuccino - which are little more than just lukewarm, over-frothed, ever-so-slightly Coffee coloured yet utterly tasteless Cups of watery Milk to me ... (*shudder*)

Go tell that to the nurses at our Royal then Tim. Morale's much lower now than it's been for a long time - much lower than a few months ago when the shit was really hitting the fan. Re this deal, is there not some kinda review clause in it when it comes to stuff exactly like what's been happening? I'm told there is.
Even if said clause didn't exist, FFS have they not deserved a raise? That's not to say many others haven't but surely... surely nurses (hospital and community), caree-home workers etc deserve higher wages after this shit-storm, regardless of any deal previously made, I couldn't give a toss if was made last year!! It's not like they're being paid enough as it is.
It's ok tho, when the second wave arrives, folk will suddenly find a new sense of appreciation, just like last time. Short ******* memories.
Err, apologies, I didn't realized you'd (possibly sensibly) all moved away from the topic. I just answered the first post I saw without looking at the rest. My bad!

It's a bit of a lost cause really because it's all coming in from next door and they have just told us that they have decided to give up on trying to control or to contain it like they always used to try to do in so many years past ... which means that all we can ever try to do now is to just keep on with trying to stop it from invading and taking over our Garden as well.

Yep! - we've tried absolutely everything over the last three decades but it only ever just keeps on with coming back with vengeance!

We now settle for using Weedkiller first, then the Flame Gun, and then digging right down and pulling up every last bit of it as much as we possibly can ... being grateful for having a brief season of seeing our intentionally planted Flowers growing in that Flower Bed between our Gardens ... and then we watch it turn up, and take over, and our battle with it recommences all over again.

I wouldn't mind SO much if only our Neighbour hadn't actually deliberately planted it there!!! She really fancies herself as being an expert Gardener and has always loved taking in and planting cuttings from family and friends over the years.

My far more knowledgeable Garden-obsessed Mum just couldn't believe her Eyes, way back in the mid 90's, when our Neighbour called her over and so proudly pointed out her 'new and interesting Plant' that was apparently given to her as 'a gift'(?!!) from her Sister!!! ;oO

We've been locked into fighting a losing battle with it ever since then - and now that same Neighbour has decided that she can't be bothered with dealing with it anymore and so she is just going to let it completely take over the other half of the Flower Bed that is on her side of the Hedge between our two Gardens.

She has a Gardener who comes around with his Wife for several hours twice a week to help her to maintain all of the rest of her Garden but he says that she's told him to just forget about it and leave it be ;o<

message 1548: by Brass Neck (new)

Brass Neck | 3979 comments Report it to the council! My 'rents did and the neighbours had to eradicate/control it (was one of many sources of friction between them though).

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prevent-j... from which comes;

"You do not have to remove Japanese knotweed from your land, but you could be prosecuted or given a community protection notice for causing a nuisance if you allow it to spread onto anyone else’s property."

message 1549: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Aug 02, 2020 02:03PM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Nah, my Mum would never ever agree to that, Mr B.

It's sad really though on many levels because Mum still wants to think of these particular Neighbours as being good friends of ours but, in reality, we have come to know (through the Lockdown) who all of our genuinely caring and sharing and supportive Neighbours are - and none of them have turned out to be the ones in our small Road that we knew at all well up until now.

Mum has also helped with looking after their Garden for them for several decades now, and especially while they were often away on Holiday until recent events. She tried her very best to work on shifting the Knotweed each time but you need to keep at it and so it was under reasonable control and almost died out for a couple of years but has come back with a vengeance and seems to be indestructible now.

We were hoping that her Gardener would get onto it? - but he can't take up any paid or unpaid time in doing what he hasn't been specifically asked to do and so he's let it be for the last two years.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It filled in a few hours for us today and now we can get to put in the Plants that I've managed to buy online for Mum this year - as she only dared to go to a local Garden Centre just the once and sadly they had next to nothing in stock when she did.
