Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments Hmm. Don't remember anything so graphic in the book. She had "hurt herself" after a failed childbirth. I suppose that would have to be made more explicit in a movie. Much like Daniel Auteil and the ribbon in Manon des Sources.

That too was gross. But Manon des Sources is a good film, Reflections etc is a turkey.

Greater Manchester says NO!!! ... we're a part of the UK, Boris, but whatever is happening in the few idealised and fantastical feet around your Front Door of Downing Street is definitely not happening here!!! ... the Infection Rate is UP and people are STILL dying here!!! ;oO

29 people died within 24 hours at Stepping Hill Hospital last Thursday ;o<

Quite right suzy. Are you sure though that all of GM says NO!! I was dismayed on VE Day when a bloke two doors down who does some pub gigs set up his proper PA in his front garden in the mid-afternoon and did a 2 hour show of singalong 60s and 70s stuff. It wasn't the noise (I stayed in and listened to my choice of music) I was concerned about but the effect on the neighbours who came to watch. At first they were socially distanced - the woman next door who is over 70 but fit & healthy has been isolating to the nth degree for 8 weeks only talking to people who were prepared to stand in the middle of her lawn through a window suddenly threw caution to the wind and stuck a chair out on the pavement with Mrs N right behind her as they slugged back prosecco or some such. Then the woman from across the road left her wall perch and came across to dance and chat followed by 3 old ladies from at least 2 different households who sat bang next to each other on her wall. Then my immediate neighbour brought out his household and shortly after up rocked his ex-wife and two kids. Some beered up chavvy folks from 3 other households turned up blocking the pavement and mingled together and when it was all over the 3 old ladies had to squeeze through their merry throng and then my over 70 neighbour was having such a good (two sheets to the wind) time she went around most of the groups nattering in close proximity. Over the weekend she's posted all sorts about how she's been totally isolating not even seeing her fella who's over 70 and completely isolating!!! Aye, right.

Maybe the sensible, non-drunken parts of GM and the UK say NO!! but it ain't a universal sentiment. Never mind, a second big spike should see us overtake Italy on deaths per million, maybe even Spain so the UK achieves top spot in Europe? Sheesh...…...

Sera69 | 1921 comments A local reverend here made the clever analogy of a tiger running loose in the village. You stay indoors until the tiger is caught, subdued or killed. Claiming the tiger doesn't exist because you cannot see it or going outdoors with the tiger still loose is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. The virus hasn't gone anywhere and will still take 1-2% (or 0.03-5%, the numbers are still big and if you're arguing over percentages you're a massive $&@# of the highest order) of the population until there is a cure. Anyone advocating relaxation is effectively saying go and feed the tiger,

Good to see the Tory government so quickly giving up on the "Save the NHS" claim as they once again start talks with America on opening up our health care system.

It didn't happen in most of the little Avenues and Crescents around here but sadly it was very obvious on enough of the main Roads that there were BBQs and Street Parties with very little attempts at social distancing going on. My Mum was horrified to see it happening a couple of Roads away from us while out walking Mitzi and came back very upset by it. And later two of our Neighbours were telling us they had seen similar scenes in other parts of our Village as well.

Seeing so many adults being such utter idiots in return for a bite of a Burger and a bit of Cake was bad enough - but Mum said the worse part for her was seeing all of the Kids racing around as one huge group, grabbing and hugging each other and even sharing between them in licks of Ice Creams - and she had to keep walking down the middle of a couple of main Roads just to avoid them all running around and colliding into her.

Was it all really worth the high risk of becoming severely ill and even dying for?!! ;oO

Interestingly, a lot of folk of my Mum's generation don't actually seem to like celebrating VE Day.

I was very shocked and upset when I first saw this mentioned online but I really do think that it should be used now ... if you want to know just how much distance you should be keeping from someone else then just imagine a precious and dearly loved family member between you ... lying there dead in a Coffin ... and stay that far apart from anyone else who is not in your own Household ;o<

message 962: by [deleted user] (new)

There was plenty of partying here too - the air raid siren was sounded to mark the end of a minutes silence and that, literally, was sounding the all clear. By the time I went out on my bike for my daily three circuits of the village, barbecues and sound systems had been set up in the front gardens of houses along the main road and the parties were not only in full swing but also in competition with each other.
I swear there were less people in attendance of the last charity fun run/cycle ride.

message 964: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments I was surprised to see photos posted on Facebook by family members in the Oldham/Royton/Shaw area all out celebrating the VE Day anniversary. Street parties seemed to be the norm. And all the bunting, cakes, rosettes, banners, Union Jacks! I take wartime service very seriously but the original VE Day was surely mostly celebrated by folks on the home front who had endured terrible tragedies, separations and shortages. The people out celebrating last week were too young to remember any of it and it came over (to me anyway) as a rather thoughtless commemoration. Plenty of tat from the pound shops and a good excuse to celebrate the good weather and getting out of the house. Given that most countries now are a mix of nationalities, it looked very jingoistic to me and made me very uncomfortable.

Brass Neck | 3979 comments "a rather thoughtless commemoration" - jingoistic excuse for a piss-up. So many union jacks but more than those were the Engerlund flags - where were the stars and stripes and hammer and sickle flags; without the Americans and Russians (and the hubristic stupidity of Hitler turning away from the invasion of Britain and starting an invasion of the USSR in mid-Summer of 1940 with just a few months before the severe Russian Winter kicked in) things would have been very different.

message 968: by Brass Neck (new)

Brass Neck | 3979 comments I rather enjoyed this analysis of Bozza's loosening of the regs;

I think I’ve worked it out...
* 4 year olds can go to school but university students who have paid for their tuition and the accommodation that they aren’t living in, can’t go back to university.
* I can go to school with many 4 year olds that I’m not related to but can’t see one 4 year old that I am related to.
* I can sit in a park, but not tomorrow or Tuesday but by Wednesday that’ll be fine.
* I can meet one person from another household for a chat or to sunbathe but not two people so if I know two people from another household I have to pick my favourite. Hopefully, I’m also their favourite person from my household or this could be awkward. But possibly I’m not. In fact, thinking about it, I definitely wouldn’t be. But as I can’t go closer than 2m to the one I choose anyway so you wouldn’t think having the other one sat next to them would matter - unless two people would restrict my eyeline too much and prevent me from being alert.
* I can work all day with my colleagues but I can’t sit in their garden for a chat after work.
* I can now do unlimited exercise when quite frankly just doing an hour a day felt like I was some kind of fitness guru. I can think of lots of things that I would like to be unlimited but exercise definitely isn’t one of them.
* I can drive to other destinations although which destinations is unclear. I was supposed to be in Brighton this weekend. Can I drive there? It’s hundreds of miles away but no one has said that’s wrong.
* The buses are still running past my house but I shouldn’t get on one. We should just let empty buses drive around so bus drivers aren’t doing nothing.
* It will soon be time to quarantine people coming into the country by air... but not yet. It’s too soon. And not ever if you’re coming from France because... well, I don’t do know why, actually. Because the French version of coronavirus wouldn’t come to the UK maybe.
* Our youngest children go back to school first because... they are notoriously good at not touching things they shouldn’t, maintain personal space at all times and never randomly lick you.
* We are somewhere in between 3.5 and 4.5 on a five point scale where 5 is all of the virus and 1 is none of the virus but 2,3 and 4 can be anything you’d like it to be really. Some of the virus? A bit of the virus? Just enough virus to see off those over 70s who were told to self isolate but now we’ve realised that they’ve done that a bit too well despite us offloading coronavirus patients into care homes and now we are claiming that was never said in the first place, even though it’s in writing in the stay at home guidance.
* The slogan isn’t stay at home any more. So we don’t have to say at home. Except we do. Unless we can’t. In which case we should go out. But there will be fines if we break the rules. So don’t do that.
Don’t forget...
Stay alert... which Robert Jenrick has explained actually means Stay home as much as possible. Obviously.
Control the virus. Well, I can’t even control my dogs and I can actually see them. Plus I know a bit about dogs and very little about controlling viruses.
Save lives. Always preferable to not saving lives, I’d say, so I’ll try my best with that one, although hopefully I don’t need telling to do that. I know I’m bragging now but not NOT saving lives is something I do every day.
So there you are. If you’re the weirdo wanting unlimited exercise then enjoy. But not until Wednesday. Obviously.
PS When can Year 7 go back to school? Not even asking for a friend!

It's rather sad as well as funny ... but if people insist on getting far too close to her or there is a group of folk who are taking over the entire Pavement so that she can't easily or safely get around them then she just takes out a large Tissue and pretends to violently cough or sneeze into it ... she says a few folk are SO shocked that they sometimes swear at her but at least they also almost throw themselves over Garden Walls or into the Hedgerow just to avoid being in any close contact with her! - LOL!!! ;o>

Isabella | 1369 comments Most people I've come across seem to be keeping to the rules but there's a core of younger people who can't/won't/don't. They walk or run side by side and don't move or cross over to avoid anyone approaching. Do we take a risk, forge ahead and confirm that the rules are for breaking? Give them a wide berth and encourage their arrogance? (Look at the oldies, what are they clinging on for?).

The truth is, they're not immune but the proportion who will suffer is small enough that it won't dawn on the rest that the rules may have saved them.

Hmmm? - we aren't that keen on Ready Meals but I do sometimes slip the odd top quality one past M&D without them always realising that I have - when I'm just too tired to even think about what we could have for Tea, never mind prep and cook it.

They are having an absolutely delicious Smoked Haddock Risotto for Tea tonight. It is from a limited exclusive Meal range from Iceland - and I genuinely doubt that anyone could ever guess that it is a Ready Meal unless they saw the Containers that it came in as it really is that good ;o>

I shall keep Parsley Box in my 'Future File' as the Meals look quite nice and the prices seem to be a lot more reasonable than some of the other Companies that I've come across.

We used to almost live off Fish bought fresh from a local Market Hall when I was a teenager as it was a time when it cost so little back then compared to Meat. We would eat Monkfish at least three times a week ... Oooh, and I can still remember just how delicious it was too!

message 986: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I've successfully managed to get 3 Supermarket Deliveries now since mid February and each of them brought around about half of what I ordered - and had to rely heavily on using Amazon and eBay and looking out for Companies on Facebook for almost all of our other supplies.

The thing is, for all of the folk who are Elderly, Disabled and Vulnerable, this Lock-down won't be ending any time soon for us like it eventually will for everyone else - and we don't have any family to rely on to help and support us so I have to keep focussed, and organised, and up-to-date ... always planning ahead for whatever might happen next if I possibly can.

If I don't get this right for us, then my M&D might start with insisting on taking huge risks to themselves by going out again. And it's bad enough having to keep on with putting all of my trust every day in my Mum still being able to manage to walk Mitzi as it is.

Yeah, i know i can do that Serial..but to be honest..the laptop has had it. It takes anything up to 12 hours to start up these days...due to some fault in it. I would just leave it on permantly, but this laptop is shared with another family member, who insists on restarting it to get on to her user account..even though i have tried repeatedly to explain that she can do all the stuff she does on her user account on mine! She doesn't seem to get that one can access the same webites online through any pc and user account that's open to her! She thinks the links she set up on her account only exist on hers!!! Try telling a nearly octogenerian woman, that it's perfectly possible to log on to her bank account on any computer. I've tried..and i bank with the same company as she does..sheesh! I even have a joint bank account with her..but she still doesn't geddit!!!

I've given up..the only way forward is to get my own new laptop, (if i could just finally pick one), and then she can continue to do her stuff (and probably struggle in the process with it) on this knackered pile of silicon chips, i'm using atm!

My mid-80s rents rely on them for their evening meals which the carer can microwave and dish up (the carer team must fight over who gets to do them - nice clean house, about 10 minutes actual work and then an amiable natter). They find them adequate for their particular needs with a few fresh or frozen veg but I wouldn't say they find them wonderful. Does puzzle me how they don't need freezing to keep them edible though.

Okay doke..will take that board thanks Sera. I'd already decided that i'd like at least 4 USB ports, either 2.0 or 3.0..but not the Type C, as i don't have anything that connects to those. Ram..isn't a huge criteria, but i guess 500GB-1TB would be sufficient, i think. As fer processors..there's so many different ones out there..i've pretty much decided to get one that has the same one in the Acer...the intel i5. Laptops with anything higher than that seem to be awfully pricey. My budget is £400 or less.

But no worries about Apple products..i've never used anything by them...ever! :)
